New elementary school will open sooner than planned

SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- The new Sharpsville Area Elementary School will open after Thanksgiving, a month earlier than anticipated.
Superintendent Dr. Derry Stufft said a meeting with contractors last week showed nearly all work will be completed by the end of October.
The $13 million project, which involves remodeling and expanding the former Pebly Early Childhood Center, was to be completed by the end of December. Pupils were to move in after Christmas break.
Stufft said the move will now be made over Thanksgiving break.
At Monday's school board meeting, representatives of the teacher and nonteaching employee unions asked for a meeting with the school board and district administrators in an effort to coordinate the move.
Gary Grandy, spokesman for the nonteaching union, said the employees have come up with some suggestions to help in the move and want to present them to school officials.
Both the South Pymatuning and Seventh Street elementary schools will be closed, and their pupils will attend the new elementary school.
Seventh Street will become the early childhood center and will house the district's central administrative offices. South Pymatuning will become a community center.
