Concert to aid fund
NILES -- A country music concert featuring Jo Dee Messina, Dwight Yoakam and Gary Allan is taking a patriotic turn. Cafaro Co. will sell up to 1,000 tickets at $10 each for the show, which will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Cafaro Field. All proceeds from sales of these tickets will be added to WYTV Channel 33's Victims Relief Fund. American Red Cross members will also be at the concert to collect contributions. The $10 tickets were to go on sale this morning at the Eastwood Mall customer service center. Call (330) 747-2661 for details. Other tickets are available from TicketMaster.
Candlelight service
COLUMBIANA -- "One Week: A Time to Remember, a Time to Grieve, a Time to Look Forward," a candlelight service with prayer, Scripture and communion, will take place at 7:30 p.m. today at Jerusalem Lutheran Church at 415 S. Main St., one block south of the railroad tracks. The service will close with candlelight to remember those who died in the terrorist attacks and those who are grieving.
Kick-A-Thon planned
Naples' Family Martial Arts centers in Boardman and Niles will conduct a Kick-A-Thon, with the theme of kicking terrorism out of America, at noon Saturday. Students at both centers will ask their families and friends to sponsor them for 5 cents a kick or a total of $5. The goal is to raise $2,000 at each center.
Thiel students help out
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Student groups at Thiel College are raising money to support the relief efforts. An effort by the fraternities and sororities on campus is spearheaded by Joshuwa Johnson, controller/treasurer of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Johnson is a senior business administration major from Kane, Pa.
"A lot of national brothers worked in the World Trade Center and were affected by this," he said. "The national director was encouraging us to give blood, but we thought raising money would be the next best thing."
Members of Kappa Sigma, Phi Theta Phi and Alpha Chi Rho fraternities and Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Xi Delta, Sigma Kappa and Chi Omega sororities also are assisting in collecting donations on campus.
The drive runs through Friday. Members of the Circle K service organization, sponsored by the local Kiwanis chapter, will be collecting funds off campus Sunday.
Coping with grief
BOARDMAN -- Hospice of the Valley's Light of Hope Community Bereavement Center will sponsor a gathering at 10 a.m. Saturday for those grieving the loss of lives in New York, Washington, D.C., and nearby Somerset, Pa.
Bereavement counselors will be available at Hospice of the Valley's Boardman location, 5190 Market St. The Light of Hope Community Bereavement Center is provided by Hospice of the Valley as a community resource. It is free.
Sept. 11 Fund at banks
YOUNGSTOWN -- Home Savings and Loan Co. and WFMJ Channel 21 have established a fund to collect money for relief efforts in New York and Washington, D.C. Donations may be made to the Sept. 11 Fund at all Home Savings branches.
The Home Savings Charitable Foundation has donated $2,500 to this fund, which was set up by the United Way of New York and the New York Community Trust.
Opportunity to donate
BOARDMAN -- Relief effort donations will be accepted at Safety Day, which will be from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Babies "R" Us on Doral Drive. The event is sponsored by the store and Mahoning Valley Parent Magazine.
Donations will be made through God's Loving Hands, a local charitable organization.
A mural of children's hand prints also will be made and dedicated to victims and rescuers. Also included will be safety exhibits and fingerprinting of children.
Community worship
McDONALD -- A community worship celebration will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 in the McDonald High School gym, 600 Iowa Ave.
An offering will be taken to aid victims and their families.
The nondenominational event is being sponsored by Woodland Park United Methodist Church, Open Door Community Church, Summit Assembly of God and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
Speaker will be Rev. Rickey Bolden, a former offensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns.
Music will be by The Mass Choir of Grace African Methodist Episcopal Church of Warren.
Collecting items
HUBBARD -- This city is collecting items needed for relief in New York City. A truck is at the city building from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Mayor George Praznik said the truck will leave for New York on Sept. 25.
For sanitary reasons, all items must be new.
Among the items that can be used are snack foods, plastic-bottled water, flashlights with batteries, cotton socks, rain slickers, work gloves, ice chests, surgical gloves, clothing, pillows, sheets and blankets.
Medical items needed
Local organizers of Kids Day America/International, a worldwide event dedicated to health, safety and environmental awareness scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, will take donations to aid the relief effort in the East.
The Pro Family Chiropractic Center at 3695B Boardman-Canfield Road, will accept bandages, gauze, surgical tape, eye wash, rubbing alcohol, peroxide, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, cotton balls, toiletries, bottled water, iodine, antiseptic spray, ice packs, dust masks, surgical gloves, canned goods and money.
The Salvation Army has agreed to take donations to New York City. A mural of children's hand prints dedicated to the victims and the safety workers of New York and Washington also will be taken to New York; children can add their prints Saturday.
The office will also offer free fingerprinting and child ID cards in coordination with the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department. Doctors will offer free spinal, dental and vision screenings.
Poland event at church
POLAND -- Blood and cash donations will be collected at a Rescue 911 event Thursday at Poland Methodist Church, U.S. Route 224. Personnel from radio stations WHOT-FM 101.1 and WYFM-FM 102.9 and television station WFMJ Channel 21 will broadcast from the church, beginning at 6 a.m. Monetary contributions will be collected for American Red Cross. A Red Cross blood drive will be from 1 to 7 p.m.
Prayer rally planned
YOUNGSTOWN -- Harvest Life Center Assembly of God in Struthers will have a prayer rally open to all faiths at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 in the DeBartolo Club at Youngstown State University. An offering will be taken for victims of the disaster.
Goldsteins to donate
HERMITAGE -- Goldstein's Furniture will donate a percentage of the proceeds from its anniversary sale to the United Way and New York Community Trust's Sept. 11 Fund. The New York fund is supporting programs assisting victims of the attacks. Goldstein's, which has stores in Hermitage, Niles and Canfield, is running its anniversary event through next Tuesday.
