Child safety dayplanned in Girard
GIRARD -- Dr. Christopher M. Hafely will join other chiropractic offices Saturday in the seventh annual Kids Day America/International, a health, safety and environmental awareness day.
Hafely will offer information on crime prevention, child safety and environmental awareness, and child ID cards. He will provide free spinal exams and scoliosis screenings for children from noon to 3 p.m. at his office at 447 Churchill Road.
Girard police will offer free fingerprinting, and Girard firemen will teach fire safety tips. Scrappy, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers mascot, Girard's Safety Pup, a Girard firetruck and the Trumbull County K-9 unit will be on hand.
Alzheimer's benefit
AUSTINTOWN -- Alterra Clare Bridge Cottage of Austintown, in conjunction with the Alzheimer's Association, will have a fund-raising Rock-A-Thon, Chinese auction, car wash and other activities from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the cottage, 1420 S. Milton Twp. trustees
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township trustees will meet in special session at 5:30 p.m. today to review architect's estimates for the new fire station. The meeting will be at the township hall on Milton Avenue.
14-year old van thief
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 14-year-old boy crashed a stolen van after a police pursuit on South Side streets then jumped out the driver's side window and continued to run Monday evening. Officers caught the boy near his home on West Chalmers Avenue. Police said a screwdriver found in the 1995 Chevrolet Lumina van was probably used to peel the steering column, which allowed the vehicle to be started without a key. The teen-ager was taken to the juvenile justice center around 9 p.m. and faces charges of receiving stolen property, fleeing and eluding, possession of criminal tools and no driver's license.
Aiding homeless
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College's chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national, coed service fraternity, is holding a Quad-a-Thon in an effort to raise awareness of homelessness tonight.
At 8 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel, Sister Claire Marie from the Prince of Peace shelter in Farrell will speak on homelessness and the shelter's efforts in the area.
After the presentation, members of Alpha Phi Omega will take cardboard boxes to Westminster College Quad, where they will sleep from 10 tonight to 5 a.m. Wednesday. For each person who sleeps in the quad, Alpha Phi Omega will donate $2 to the shelter. A collection also will take place across campus the rest of the week.
Stolen steaks
AUSTINTOWN -- A Deer Creek Court man was arrested Monday after he tried to run out of a supermarket with two ribeye steaks in his pants, police said.
Police also say the man, 42, had several pills of the prescription drugs OxyContin, hydrocodone and diazepam in his front pocket when he was arrested.
Employees of the Giant Eagle supermarket on Mahoning Avenue said they watched as the man put the two ribeye steaks down his pants and walked out of the store at about 3:16 p.m. Monday. An employee brought the man back into the store after a brief chase.
The pills were found when police arrived and searched the man. The man also was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Canfield on a charge of illegal processing of drug documents.
Police charged the man with theft, possession of dangerous drugs and three counts of drug abuse.
