FOP plans to honorcops who died in N.Y.
HOWLAND -- The township's Fraternal Order of Police organization is sponsoring an honor ceremony at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Howland High School gymnasium.
All law enforcement officers in Trumbull County are invited to honor police officers who died in last week's terrorists attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.
Officers will be asked to wear black bands around their badges as a reminder of those who died and the danger police officers face on a regular basis, as well as a result of the attacks.
Attacked by dogs
HOWLAND -- Two dogs attacked a township man and his dog, police said.
Police Chief Steve Lamantia said Robert Kubiak, of Shadowood Drive, was walking his beagle around 3 p.m. Sunday on South Street when a rottweiler and a German shepherd-Labrador mix attacked them.
Kubiak, who is director of Trumbull County Children Services, was treated by paramedics. His beagle was taken to a local veterinarian for surgery, Lamantia said.
The Trumbull County dog warden took the two attacking dogs into custody.
Lamantia said he plans to file a charge of failing to properly confine animals against the dogs' owners.

Nurses talks halt
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Allegheny General Hospital has announced it has halted contract negotiations with its nurses union despite a growing demand for nurses and pressure from staff to boost salaries.
"We are not making another offer," said hospital spokesman Tom Chakurda.
The hospital opened wage talks last month with the Service Employees International Union, which represents its 1,500 nurses. Hospital officials were looking for ways to stop nurses from leaving for higher-paying jobs.
Chakurda said administrators struck a deal with a union bargaining committee but the nurses rejected it.
The hospital may be forced to use traveling nurses to make up for those lost.
