The Cardinals rallied from a first-game drubbing.

BELOIT -- Junior Jill Vertanen made nine points, nine kills, six blocks and two aces Saturday as the Canfield High volleyball team upset once-beaten and state-ranked United, 3-15, 15-13, 15-8.
Canfield coach Ronie Haurin credited the turnaround to "key digs and kills at the second game" by the Cardinals.
In the third game, Canfield jumped ahead 11-3 when United, a state semifinalist last year, came to life.
Key plays: "When [the Eagles] closed the gap to 11-8, we had some key aces and digs by [junior] Amanda Williams and we were finally complementing each other like we need to," Haurin said. "We finally kept the pressure on."
Senior Stephanie Bellish scored eight points with three aces and made eight assists as Canfield improved to 3-5. Senior Vanessa Schutz had six blocks.
For United (3-2), Mandy Clapsaddle made nine assists, Tai Brown made nine digs, Kodey Miller had six blocks and Sara Hotchkiss scored six aces.
West Branch 13-15-16, United 15-10-14: BELOIT -- Jen Griffith led the Warriors (5-7) with 15 points, 16 assists and eight kills. Amber Metzgar had five points, seven assists and seven kills.
Jen Weingart made 10 kills while Ashley Armstrong and Jen Hayes each scored six points.
For the Golden Eagles, Clapsaddle had 19 kills and Tonya Beaumont made 20 assists.
West Branch 15-15, Canfield 4-11: BELOIT -- Molly New and Amanda Benner led the Warriors with seven points each. Taylor Woods scored six points while Metzgar made seven kills.
For the Cardinals, Schutz made five kills and three digs, Bellish made six assists and senior Kara Kalasky had three digs.
Fitch 15-10-15, Solon 13-15-10: SOLON -- Jessica DiCarloi scored 10 points and made five kills and seven blocks for the Falcons (4-3).
Katie McDermott scored nine points and made five kills and seven blocks while Stacie Mang and Ashlee Lemke each scored seven points and made three blocks. Maggie Case made nine blocks and four blocks.
Salem 15-14-15, Stow 7-16-8: STOW -- Jill Barry collected six aces, three kills and three tips for the Quakers (5-2).
Tiffanie Heestand had three kills, two tips and three blocks while Kellie Crouse added six aces and two kills against Stow (5-1).
Millersburg West Holmes 15-15, Salem 3-1: STOW -- Lauren Teal had two blocks while Taylor Hendricks added an ace and a kill for the Quakers against West Holmes (6-0), the top-ranked Division II team in the state.
Leetonia 15-15, Ursuline 4-6: LEETONIA -- Brianna Duko had nine points, two aces an assist and a spike to lead Leetonia (1-7) over Ursuline. Jessica Deville had four points, one ace, seven spikes and two kills and Keri Chepke had seven points, two aces, and a kill in the victory.
Hubbard 15-16, Westerville North 3-14: COLUMBUS -- Katy Jo Mroski had 21 kills and 11 blocks while Amy Falhamer added 13 kills and 15 points for the Eagles. Courtney Hoch also collected eight kills, eight digs and seven points.
Hubbard 15-15, Newark Catholic 4-7: COLUMBUS -- Mroski had 22 kills, Hoch had nine kills and Falhamer tacked on 11 kills and 15 points for the Eagles.
Hubbard 15-15-15, Thomas Worthington 5-17-7: COLUMBUS -- In the championship match of the event, Mroski had 34 kills to snap her school record of 26 for the Eagles. Amanda Lingenfelter had 32 digs to break the school record of 31 digs in a match. Also for the Eagles, Nicole Pringle had 34 assists to snap the school mark of 26 in a match. Hoch had 15 kills and 22 digs while Falhamer had 21 kills and 23 digs for Hubbard (10-0).
