Artisans festival
LEETONIA -- The 19th annual Leetonia Artisans Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Wick Park. The event is free. Area artisans will demonstrate their skills and offer items for sale, a sheep-to-shawl sheep shearing and weaving demonstration among them. Vendors pay a setup fee to participate and donate one of their creations for an auction at the end of the day. There will also be a classic car show, auction, food and entertainment throughout the day. Prizes will be awarded to the best garden scarecrow created by festival visitors. Proceeds benefit park maintenance and improvement projects.
Sewer groundbreaking
DAMASCUS -- Ground will be broken at 6 p.m. Tuesday for a $1.5 million sewer system in Damascus. The system is needed because several residents in Damascus and surrounding Goshen Township have failing septic tanks. It will serve about 200 residents and be able to treat up to 80,000 gallons of sewage per day.
Teachers get raises
COLUMBIANA -- Columbiana Board of Education approved salary changes for six teachers due to increased education and seniority: Michele Pease from $42,948 to $45,627; Diane Barnes from $44,308 to $47,172; Jason Martin from $28,949 to $30,898; Nancy Evans from $42,404 to $45,009; Jamison Lewis from $24,038 to $24,338; and Ben Shaw from $24,096 to $25,491.
Pickup stolen
SALEM -- A pickup truck was stolen from in front of a residence on the 1500 block of Carol Circle. Police said Friday a 1991 Ford Ranger, was taken sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday.
Robbery, theft charges
SHARON, Pa.-- Police on Thursday arrested Craig M. Farringer, 46, whose last known address was in Sharon, on charges of robbery and theft. Farringer is accused of snatching some prescription slips from a 42-year-old woman walking near the Rite Aid Pharmacy at 811 E. State St. on Aug. 12. The prescriptions were for antibiotic drugs, police said. Farringer is in the State Correctional Facility at Mercer on unrelated charges. He was arraigned in the Sharon case and returned to prison under $1,500 bond.
Meeting day changed
LISBON -- Columbiana County commissioners' next meeting will be Tuesday instead of their normal Wednesday gathering time. The meeting, set for 10 a.m. at the county courthouse, is being called as part of "Ohio County Government National Support Day." County commissioners throughout the state were asked by the County Commissioners Association of Ohio to meet Tuesday to mark the one-week anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
Board appointees
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County has three new members on the county board of elections. An order issued by Judge Ralph D. Pratt of the common pleas appointed former county Commissioner Thomas J. Fee, court Administrator Philip Boudewyns and Luann Parkonen, Judge Pratt's law clerk, to the board. Lawrence County commissioners learned last month that they had to step down from the board when petitions for a government study referendum were successful. Voters will decide in November if a government study commission will look at various ways to organize county government. Any recommended changes, which could include abandoning the county commissioner form of government, will go back to voters in the next election. State law prohibits county commissioners from serving on the election board anytime they will be directly affected by anything on the ballot.
Suspicious activity
POLAND -- Police were called to U.S. Rep. James Traficant's North Main Street residence about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday after a neighbor called the family to inform them that a suspicious man holding a sign was standing outside their home. Police could not locate the man or the neighbor who had seen him.
Block Watch meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- "Protecting Yourself Against Crime and Scams" will be the topic of the Southern Boulevard Block Watch meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic Parish Center (the former St. Dominic School) at 3403 Southern Blvd. The speaker will be Dee Scotchie, editor of Youngstown Police Department's Golden Gazette crime prevention newsletter.
Event postponed
EAST LIVERPOOL -- The Ohio Citizen Action group has postponed River Canvass 2001, which was scheduled for Sept. 17-28 with events from East Liverpool to Cincinnati. Officials said the event will be postponed until a better time. For more information, call Jennifer O'Donnell at (330) 374-8976.
