Games postponed
PITTSBURGH, PA. -- All football games involving WPIAL schools, scheduled for tonight, have been postponed until Saturday in observance of President Bush's directive of a day of mourning for the victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks.
The revised schedule appears in the prep schedule on this page.
Butler Wickselects players
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ross Watson of Fitch, Geoff Cody of Salem and Anthony Floyd of Wilson were the Butler Wick Scholar Athletes selected for the past week.
Watson, a senior defensive back with a 3.3 grade point average, set a school record with three interceptions, one for a touchdown and also had six tackles and caught two passes.
Cody, a junior linebacker with a 3.125 grade point average, made 11 tackles for the Quakers.
Floyd, a 6-0, 190 pound senior linebacker with a 3.0 GPA, finished with three sacks and five solo tackles and two hits for losses.
David Wenger isnational champion
INDIANAPOLIS -- David Wenger, a senior at Miami (Ohio) University from South Range High, is a national bicycling champion.
Wenger won the United States Cycling Federation-NCCA National Track Cycling Championship last week at the Major Tayor Velodrome with 32 points, and earned Collegiate All-American honors.
He became the first Miami cyclist to win a national title.
Wenger defeated Michael Friedman of Penn State, the current national road cycling champion, who finished second with 27 points in a field of 30 finishers.
Wenger's win capped a successful season for him with the Mercy cycling team of Ft. Smith, Ark. His campaign included three wins in Pro/Elite races and numerous top finishes.
Italian-American HOF meeting
The National Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame, Mahoning Valley Chapter, will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at Vernon's Cafe and Banquet Center on Youngstown-Warren Road.
The guest speaker will be Roy Nard, Mooney High girls basketball coach.

MUC teams win
ALLIANCE -- The Mount Union College men's and women's cross country teams both finished first at the California (Pa.) Invitational.
The women's team was paced by freshman Kristen Koelling who placed second with a time of 20 minutes, 39 seconds.
Mark Prejsnar, a Poland High graduate, led the men with a winning time of 27:13.
Mercer to race
Mercer, Pa. -- Mercer Raceway Park will go forward ith racing as planned on Saturday night for the fifth annual Chuck Marsh Memorial featuring the Luxaire Heating & amp; Cooling Sprint Cars, the Bolland Machine Big-Block Modifieds, and the Butterfield's Pub Stock Cars.
Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and racing will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults. Students 6-15 are $5. The family pass is $33. Children five and under are free. Pit passes are $25.

Third straight
SEWICKLEY, Pa. -- Carol Semple Thompson won her third straight U.S. Senior Women's Amateur title, taking the final two holes on her home course for a 2-up victory over Anne Carr.
Semple Thompson has won six U.S. Golf Association titles to tie Hollis Stacy and Glenna Collett Vare for third place on the women's list.

Seles breezesinto semifinals
SALVADOR, Brazil -- Top-seeded Monica Seles breezed past Tatiana Panova 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semifinals of the $400,000 Brasil Open.
Seles next plays Slovakia's Henrieta Nagyova.
Jelena Dokic, the No. 2 seed, also advanced, eliminating Samantha Reeves 6-3, 6-2. In the final, Dokic will play Rossana de los Rios, who beat No. 4-seeded Silvia Farina Elia 6-3, 6-2.
Nagyova upset third-seeded Amanda Coetzer.
In men's second-round play, Fernando Meligeni beat Federico Browne 7-5, 6-4, while Ramon Delgado defeated Cecil Mamiit 6-3, 6-4.
Ricardo Mello rallied to beat Nicolas Massu 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 and advance to the quarterfinals.
