Contracts awarded: The board of education on Thursday awarded two contracts totaling $1.1 million for the computer technology and heating and air conditioning packages at the high school, which is now under renovation, and the planned new Roosevelt Elementary building, to be built behind the high school.
U The technology bid package for $720,000 was awarded to Avaya Inc. of Independence, and will include a complete upgrade of the district's computer technology in both the existing high school, and the planned new elementary building.
U The heating and air conditioning package was awarded to Control Solution Inc., Cleveland, totaling $398,295 for both buildings: $171,371 for the elementary school and $226,924 for the high school. The package includes a new boiler and hot water return system to heat and cool the high school and wiring to the thermostats for individual controls in each building.
U Current girls track coach Diane Krumpak was formally hired as head of the cross country team at a rate of $2,701 a year. She had served as a volunteer coach, but parents last month asked the board to add a paid coach for the district's 52 runners.
U Other supplemental positions: Tammy Camuso and Allyson Miles, who will share duties as fifth and sixth grade girls basketball coach, each at $491 annually; Mark Komlanc, freshman boys basketball coach, $2,701 a year; Rick Fox, assistant boys basketball coach, $3,192 annually; and Ron Mamrick, eighth grade boys basketball coach, $1,964 annually.
U The board also hired Teresa Smolka as a part-time elementary computer teacher, at $16.12 an hour for 19.5 hours a week, replacing Roselyn Gadd, who resigned.
TOWNSHIP TRUSTEES
WEATHERSFIELD
Rescheduled: Weathersfield trustees met in special session Thursday after rescheduling their Tuesday regular meeting because of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
U Trustees accepted the resignation of Patrolman Dan Kiger, who is taking a non-police position with the Weathersfield Local Schools effective Sept. 19. His resignation reduces the township's police force to eight full-time officers, excluding the police chief and captain.
U Fire Chief Randy Pugh and fire captains Todd Stitt and John Knepper gave demonstrations of new equipment, including a second automatic defibrillator and a thermal imaging camera.
U A new video camera was also displayed. The camera is mounted on a police cruiser and will be used to record patrols and stops.
