Woman gets prison
YOUNGSTOWN -- Maxine C. Miller, 39, of Davis Road, Lake Milton, was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. She had pleaded guilty in June to aggravated vehicular homicide.
Miller's motorcycle crashed on Northeast River Road in May 2000, ejecting both her and a passenger, 39-year-old Eric Miller of Lundy's Lane, Lake Milton. Eric Miller, who was not related to Maxine Miller, died from his injuries.
Judge R. Scott Krichbaum said both Millers were intoxicated at the time of the crash.
"What you did was truly a criminal act," the judge said. "What the heck were you doing drunk and letting somebody ride with you?"
Indicted on gun charge
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted Dennis L. Long, 23, of East Florida Avenue, Youngstown, charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm. If convicted, Long faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and $250,000 fine.
The indictment states that Long was found in possession of a gun on May 9. Long has been prohibited from possessing firearms after being convicted of a drug charge in 1999.
Adult education
AUSTINTOWN -- The Austintown ABLE program will begin offering free adult education classes Monday in room 131 at Austintown Middle School.

Arrested in attack
SHEAKLEYVILLE, Pa. -- A 21-year-old Clarks Mills man was in Mercer County Jail on $15,000 bond after Pennsylvania State Police said he attacked his ex-girlfriend at her home in Sandy Creek Township. The Wilhelm Road man is charged with burglary, assault, criminal trespassing, cruelty to animals and public drunkenness.
Police said he kicked in the door of the home of Ashley L. Campbell, 18, of Reseigh Road, about 4 a.m. Sunday and began breaking items in the house.
He refused to leave. Campbell called police and then fled, carrying a telephone and her pet hamster. She ran east on Reseigh Road but the suspect chased her, police said. At one point, she dropped the hamster and the man stomped on the animal, killing it, police said.
State troopers reached the scene moments later and said they found the man holding Campbell from behind in a headlock. She wasn't hurt.
Recycling drive
BOARDMAN -- Township recycling will sponsor a scrap metal recycling drive from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 22 behind the Shields Road and Lockwood Boulevard Fire Station. Scrap metal items such as washers, dryers, hot water tanks, some car parts, power tools and lawn chairs, among other things, will be accepted.
No appliances with refrigerants will be taken. Donators must be able to unload all material.
Weathersfield meeting
MINERAL RIDGE-- Weathersfield Township trustees have rescheduled the meeting that was canceled Tuesday because of the terrorist attacks in New York City and in Washington, D.C. It will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the township building.
Trustee Fred Bobovnyk said trustees will act only on agenda items and no public participation is planned.
