VOLANT, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police were still searching this morning for a 28-year-old Grove City, Pa., man suspected of stabbing 42-year-old George Heckathorne of McNulty Road, Volant.
Police said Heckathorne and the suspect became involved in an argument on the roadway outside Heckathorne's home late Saturday night. Heckathorne was stabbed twice in the abdomen and once in the throat.
After receiving initial treatment at United Community Hospital in Grove City, he was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, where he was in serious condition this morning.
Charges are also pending against a second suspect who drove the car in which the suspect fled after the stabbing.
Mercer Co. commissionwill meet at school
MERCER -- Mercer County commissioners will go back to high school for their meeting Thursday.
In an effort to make meetings accessible to all areas of the county, as well as to educate students about county government, they will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the auditorium of Greenville High School, 9 Donation Road, Greenville.
Commissioners will conduct their regular meeting, then have a short question and answer session for students afterward.
Cash stolen in break-in
SALEM -- Nearly $50 was stolen from the Muffler House, 209 W. State St., police said. The business was broken into either late Thursday or early Friday, police said. Thieves pried a door lock to enter the business.
Logan appointed
SALINEVILLE -- Gov. Bob Taft appointed Columbiana County Commissioner Sean D. Logan of Salineville to the state's Solid Waste Management Advisory Council for a term ending June 23, 2003.
The council advises and assists the director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency with preparation of the state's solid waste management plan and periodic revisions to the plan. Members are compensated for expenses only.
Logan, a former state legislator, replaces Arthur D. Haddad of Troy, whose term expired.
Vacant house torched
SHARON, Pa. -- Firefighters say a vacant house was set on fire Saturday morning. Flames were spotted in the kitchen area at 423 Quimby St. at 8:33 a.m. Firefighters were able to contain the damage to the kitchen, and there were no injuries.
The name of the homeowner was not available from firefighters.
Quality crafters sought

Fatal motorcycle crash
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kevin Dougherty, 44, of Atkinson Avenue was killed when his motorcycle, traveling at excessive speed, crashed around 1 a.m. Sunday on the Himrod Avenue expressway, just moments after he left Interstate 680 southbound, reports show.
His passenger, Christine Gibson, 37, of West Wood Street, Lowellville, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where her condition wasn't available today.
Dougherty's motorcycle hit a guardrail, went airborne, then struck a tree, said Detective Sgt. Rick Hart of the accident investigation unit. Gibson was thrown from the bike about 50 feet past the guardrail. Hart said the speed was more than 70 mph in the 50 mph zone.
Youth leadership
YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications for the Youth Leadership Mahoning Valley Class of 2002 will be available to high school sophomores with leadership potential this month and next month. The program teaches students about the major systems of the Mahoning Valley and helps them develop effective working relationships with its leaders.
Participants complete a six-month program, including a two-day opening retreat in December and six monthly daylong sessions on issues of concern to the community.
The issues include health care, social services, education, local history, media, the arts, business opportunities, government, criminal justice and quality of life.
