LEETONIA Man hit by car at party in field is hospitalized

About 10 young people were attending the party, the sheriff said.
LEETONIA -- Investigators are trying to determine how a Salem man was hit by a car during a party in a field.
Carl Henkel, 19, of 165 Highland Ave., was struck at about 2 a.m. Sunday in a field off Beeson Mill Road in Fairfield Township, just east of Leetonia, Columbiana County Sheriff Dave Smith said this morning.
Smith said Henkel was among a group of about 10 people who were having a party in the field near a private lake called Horseshoe Lake.
The individuals at the party were either in their late teens or early 20s, Smith said. It's unclear whether they were consuming alcohol.
During the party, Henkel was struck by a car, authorities said.
Smith said authorities are trying to determine who was driving the vehicle, which is registered to a Leetonia man.
Henkel was taken first to Salem Community Hospital.
At about 3:30 a.m., he was transported from there by helicopter to Cleveland Metro Health Center in Cleveland.
His condition was unavailable this morning.
