GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The 21st annual Mercer County Marching Band Festival will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Grove City High School Athletic Field. The event will feature 12 Mercer County high school marching bands: Commodore Perry, Farrell, Grove City, Greenville, Hickory, Kennedy Catholic, Lakeview, Mercer, Reynolds, Sharon, Sharpsville and West Middlesex. A preshow will begin at 6:30 featuring the Commodore Perry band.
The event is sponsored by the Grove City Area High School Instrumental Music Department in conjunction with the Mercer County Band Directors Association.
Tickets for the event are $4 for adults, $2 for students and senior citizens and can be purchased from the participating schools or at the stadium the night of the festival.
Children under 5 are admitted free.
Meeting to focuson abandoned quarry
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania officials will address concerns about plans for an abandoned quarry near the Poland Township, Ohio, line at a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mahoning Presbyterian Church on New Castle-Struthers Road.
Erskine Resources has submitted a proposal to do a reclamation contract for the former limestone quarry located off Erskine Quarry Road. Their intention to bury coal ash as part of the reclamation has generated concern about water and air quality and truck traffic.
Scott Horrell of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said residents will have an opportunity to comment. Written comments also will be accepted.
A copy of the project proposal is on file at the Lawrence County Conservation District Office, 430 Court St., New Castle, where it can be inspected between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.
Flea market for pets
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Promises for Pets, a nonprofit animal welfare and educational organization, is sponsoring a flea market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Cascade Antique Gallery, 318 Grove St. Inspired by PBS' "Antique Roadshow," the event will feature antique appraisals from 9 a.m. to noon. Two items will be appraised for a $5 fee.
A variety of new and used merchandise including antiques, collectibles, housewares, decorative items, toys, sports equipment, electronics and other things will be sold.
Pets will be on view with pet-related information, and pet gifts and treats will be for sale. Refreshments will be available. Proceeds will benefit Promises for Pets low-cost spay and neuter program, pet foster care and plans for the Promise Place, a "no-kill" shelter and adoption center. For details, call (724) 924-9645.
Rape crisis volunteers
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Women's Shelter/Rape Crisis Center of Lawrence County will begin fall volunteer training classes Sept. 25.
The 12-week course, which meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, will cover all dynamics of sexual assault and domestic violence. Volunteers are needed to help staff members and victims as well as provide other services such as child care, fund raising, clerical and maintenance.
