Fatal accident
LISBON -- A 49-year-old Carrollton man was found dead by the Ohio State Highway Patrol on Saturday afternoon.
The patrol said Lee R. Cross was found in his 1999 Ford Explorer at the bottom of an 8-foot culvert off U.S. Route 30. Officials said Cross was driving west on Route 30, about one mile west of Lisbon, when his sport utility vehicle went off the right side of the road, struck a culvert, overturned, struck a mailbox and guardrail and overturned again. Cross was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident is still under investigation.
East Side stabbing
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 55-year-old East Earle Avenue man was stabbed in the ribs about 1 a.m. Saturday at an apartment building at 664 McBride St. on the city's East Side. It is unclear whether the man was inside or outside the building when he was attacked.
Initially, the man told police he'd been stabbed while standing outside. Later, he told police that an intruder entered the apartment where he was, attacked him in the kitchen and exited through a rear door.
The victim told police he did not recognize his attacker and was reluctant to talk. He was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he remains in stable condition.
Car sale robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- After being offered to purchase a vehicle for $100 a month, a 25-year-old Auburndale Avenue man was robbed of his down payment at gunpoint by the automobile's owner. The 23-year-old suspect, of Youngstown, asked to be dropped off at his house after which the victim could have the vehicle.
Both men got in the car. But at Hudson and St. Louis avenues, the suspect stopped the vehicle, and pointed a gun at the victim's head and demanded money, police said. The victim gave up $102 and walked home to call police.
Meeting to focuson abandoned quarry
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania officials will address concerns about plans for an abandoned quarry near the Poland Township, Ohio, line at a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mahoning Presbyterian Church on New Castle-Struthers Road.
Erskine Resources has submitted a proposal to do a reclamation contract for the former limestone quarry off Erskine Quarry Road. Their intention to bury coal ash as part of the reclamation has generated concern about water and air quality and truck traffic.
Scott Horrell of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said residents will have an opportunity to comment. Written comments also will be accepted.
A copy of the project proposal is on file at the Lawrence County Conservation District Office, 430 Court St., New Castle, where it can be inspected between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.
Bank laptop missing
YOUNGSTOWN -- A laptop computer was stolen from a desk in Bank One's downtown office Friday afternoon. A bank employee told police the Dell Latitude CPI 266 that was on a desk in an unlocked office disappeared between noon and 1 p.m. while employees were out to lunch.
