YOUNGSTOWN -- Guiding Light Ministries will dedicate its Center of Hope facility in the former Jefferson Elementary School.
Dr. Chris Joda of Christ Chapel International, Lagos, Nigeria, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. each day.
On Sept. 16, Evangelist Nettie Ward of Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland will speak at 10 a.m.
Bishop William Morris Jr., bishop of the Ohio Full Gospel Baptist Fellowship, will speak at 5 p.m. Music will be provided by Shiloh Full Gospel Baptist Church in Mansfield. Dinner will be served at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Call (330) 743-6635 to make dinner reservations.
Gospel competition
CLEVELAND -- The combined choirs from Greater Friendship Baptist Church will represent Youngstown at the "2001 McDonald's Gospel Choir Competition." The free event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum. Other competing choirs are Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Voices of Mega and the Angelic Voices of Sanctuary, all from Cleveland; the Antioch Baptist Church's Instruments of Praise and the Community Life Church of God in Christ, both from Canton and the Body of Christ Male Chorus from Lorain. The winner will get a professional CD recording. During the event, recording artist Kim Burrell will perform.
80th anniversary
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reed's Chapel A.M.E. Church will celebrate its 80th anniversary next weekend.
Judge Carol E. Squire, court of domestic relations, juvenile branch in Columbus, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Brentford House in Hubbard. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children under age 12. There will be a prayer breakfast Sept. 15 at the church and a service at 11 a.m. Sept. 16.
Padre Pio prayer group
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Sacred Heart Padre Pio Prayer Group will have a 33rd anniversary Mass for the stigmatist at the Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted on Sept. 23. Prayers begin at 11:30 a.m., Mass is at noon, followed by a program and social.
Blessing of pets
POLAND -- Holy Family Church will have a Blessing of the Pets service at 2 p.m. Oct. 7. The event will begin at the playground adjacent to the school and proceed to the church.
Labyrinth walk
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- EverGreen will have a labyrinth walk from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 22. There will be a talk on the history of labyrinths before the walk. Registration is not required. Call (724) 964-8920 ext. 3350.
Pastor installed
NORTH GEORGETOWN -- The Rev. Robert D. Cheyney Jr. was ordained Aug. 25 by Bishop Marcus Miller of the Northeastern Ohio Synod ELCA at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strongsville, Ohio. The Rev. Mr. Cheyney was installed the following day as presiding minister of Emmanual Lutheran Church. This Sunday, marks the beginning of Sunday school at 9:15 a.m. and worship at 10:30 a.m.
Rally Days
YOUNGSTOWN -- A number of churches will have rally and homecoming events for the beginning of a new church year, including:
UStruthers Presbyterian Church will have its Rally Sunday starting with breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by youth and adult classes. Worship at 11 a.m. will include infant Baptism.
UFirst Presbyterian Church of Warren will have its Rally Day starting at 10 a.m. Sunday. There will be food and games after the service along with tours of the church.
UTrinity United Methodist Church of Youngstown will begin its Homecoming Sunday at 9:15 a.m. this Sunday with an adult education class on topics that include fruit of the spirit, the will of God, prayer and service. Worship is at 10:45 a.m.
UMahoning United Methodist Church of Youngstown will have a Rally Day Sept. 16. At 9:30 a.m., children will gather in the church's recreational area for games. During worship, teachers will be recognized and third graders will receive a Bible.
UPrince of Peace Lutheran Church in Cortland will use the theme "Fanning the Flames" for its Rally Day. Its new schedule will feature traditional worship at 8:30 a.m., Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. and a contemporary service at 11 a.m. A picnic will be at noon.
Children's Bible study
AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown Baptist Church will have a Bible study from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 15 for children in grades one through six. The theme is, "The Bible, the Best Book of the Them All." The event will end with a meal. Call (330) 792-9532.
Holy Trinity concerts
YOUNGSTOWN -- Holy Trinity Baptist Church's The Love Divine Usher Ministry will present The Divine Unity, a concert at 6 p.m. today. Performers include King's Dominion and members of the Hill Family.

LAKE MILTON --Lake Milton Presbyterian Church will have a "Community Family Fest" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. There will be story-telling, crafts, games and information on social service agencies.
Red Mass set
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Fifth Annual Red Mass, a celebration for those in the judicial and legal professions, will be at 4 p.m. Sept. 23 at St. Columba Cathedral. Dr. John E. YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Hycel B. Taylor II, senior pastor of Second Baptist Church in Evanston, Ill., will speak at 10:45 a.m. Sept 16 at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Taylor will be at a reception at 4 p.m. Sept 15. He's a former pastor of Elizabeth.
Family conference
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- The Sons of Encouragement, a group of married men in Northeast Ohio who promote passing Christian values down through generations, will have a Legacy Conference from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 15 at Blossom Music Center.
