SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame has broken ground for a performing arts center to be named after the wife of the late mall developer Edward J. DeBartolo of Youngstown.
The Marie P. DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts will cost in excess of $50 million and has been underwritten with a portion of a $33 million gift that DeBartolo gave to Notre Dame in 1989 in honor of his wife.
Edward J. DeBartolo was a 1932 graduate of Notre Dame. His children, Edward Jr. and Denise DeBartolo York, attended the groundbreaking this week, along with Notre Dame graduate Regis Philbin, host of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."
Philbin has made a $2.75 million contribution to the project to create the Regis Philbin Studio Theatre in the center.
The center will house Notre Dame's film, television and theater department, a 200-seat cinema theater and a 100-seat organ and chorale hall. Construction will begin later this year and is to be completed in 2004.
