LAKE MILTON -- A Warren man arrested in a Mahoning Avenue barn was to be arraigned today in Mahoning County Court, Austintown, on charges of criminal trespassing and receiving stolen property. Milton Township police received a call Tuesday afternoon from a Mahoning Avenue woman who said someone had been sleeping in her barn. The woman found nearly $3,200 in stolen property and a duffel bag full of men's clothing in the barn. She asked police to come back and check the barn that night. Milton police, Jackson Township police and Mahoning County deputy sheriffs found the man, 24, of Tod Avenue, when they came back to check early Wednesday.
Board eyes abatement
CAMPBELL -- A 57 percent tax abatement for eight years could bring in 11 jobs and add to the city's tax base if it's approved by Mahoning County commissioners during their meeting today. City council approved the abatement during their regular meeting Wednesday. It would allow Malmer & amp; Frangopoulos Ltd. to add an estimated $600,000 medical practice building onto an office building on McCartney Road. Despite the abatement, Mayor John Dill said the city will benefit from income taxes and the additional property tax the expansion will bring in.
Golf cart missing
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 1992 gas-powered golf cart was reported missing Wednesday from Stambaugh Golf Course, the city-owned course on Gypsy Lane. The cart is white with a brown plastic canopy and has a "City of Youngstown" sticker on the back. When the carts were put away at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, the golf pro thought one was possibly missing. A numbered golf key believed to have been taken from a cart a week ago was not reported stolen until Wednesday, police said.
Firefighters contract
CAMPBELL -- City council approved a three-year contract with the fire department that includes a 3 percent pay raise each year for the city's nine full-time firefighters. Firefighters were working under a contract that expired Dec. 1, 2000, while negotiations took place over the last 11 months. "We feel it is a fair contract," said Frank Phillips, president of Local 2998. "We hope to keep a good working relationship with the city now that we have a new contract."
'Idora' author to speak
NILES -- Rick Shale, co-author of "Idora Park: The Last Ride of Summer," will be a guest speaker at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society's 126th Founder's Day dinner Tuesday at the McKinley National Memorial. Shale is a professor of English and American studies at Youngstown State University. The McKinley Memorial honors President McKinley, the 25th president, who was born in Niles and attended school in Poland and Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. He was shot Sept. 6, 1901, and died eight days later. The dinner, at 6:30 p.m., will be preceded by a social hour, and there will be tours of the memorial building. Windows are stolen
CANFIELD -- A construction crew who had left six vinyl windows worth $1,800 in the 6000 block of Barrington Drive over the holiday weekend reported them stolen Tuesday to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department. The windows had been under some plywood at the site.
Tests on pipe bomb
NORTH JACKSON -- Tests on the remains of a pipe bomb that exploded here this weekend probably won't be complete until next week, said Orrin Hill, Jackson Township's police chief. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is testing to determine what type of explosives were used in the bomb. It exploded late Friday or early Saturday at a door of United Auto Workers Local 1112's union hall, Hill said. The explosion destroyed two large windows and damaged glass doors and the concrete structure around the entrance.
Poland zoning meeting
POLAND -- The monthly meeting of the Poland Township Zoning Commission scheduled for 7 tonight has been canceled. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in the township government center.
