NILES -- A 19-year-old man accused of beating another man Tuesday night was to appear in Niles Municipal Court this morning.
Police filed a felonious assault charge this morning in court against Craig Honkonen. Court records list Honkonen's address on South Cleveland Avenue, but police said he is homeless.
He is accused of beating Mike Davis, 30, of Third Street. Davis was in serious condition this morning at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Youngstown.
Police Chief Bruce Simeone said the two men bought beer at a Robbins Avenue convenience store and walked back into the woods near Gas Well Road, where they got into a fight.
Honkonen asked an employee at the convenience store to call police when Davis was unresponsive. Simeone said Honkonen initially told police he found Davis that way, but later confessed.
Kidnapping reported
WARREN -- A 32-year-old Washington Street N.E. woman told police her ex-boyfriend kidnapped her for a brief time.
The woman said she got into her van in her driveway around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and found the man sitting inside.
She told police the man pointed a gun at her, forced her to drive around the city and threatened to kill her and her family.
He is being sought.
Police investigatecrash that killed woman
CORTLAND -- City police are investigating a crash that killed a 44-year-old Johnston Township woman.
Jo Carroll was driving south on state Route 5 around 7:10 a.m. Wednesday when her vehicle went left of center and struck a pickup truck that was headed north, police said.
The truck driver had minor injuries. Carroll died at the scene, police said.
Area break-ins have police investigating
WARREN -- Police are investigating several early-morning break-ins.
According to reports, someone broke into Mary M's Restaurant, 2940 Parkman Road N.W.; Central Christian Church, 2051 East Market Street; and Army & amp; Navy, 2185 Parkman Road N.W.
Police went to Mary M's Restaurant around 4:50 a.m. after the alarm went off. They found the north side door broken. Nothing inside appeared to be missing, reports stated.
At 5:25 a.m., an employee at Central Christian Church called police and said that someone pried open a door. Police found evidence that someone tried to pry open a vending machine inside, including a screwdriver, hammer and tire iron.
At 6:30 a.m., the alarm went off at the Army & amp; Navy store. Police found a north side window broken. Nothing appeared to be missing.
Man free on bond
NILES -- A North Road man is free on bond after being arrested on four charges of aggravated trafficking in drugs. Patrick J. Kearney II, 30, was secretly indicted by a Trumbull County grand jury last week.
Complaints reviewed
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Elections Commission will review complaints against three Trumbull County candidates who were late filing campaign finance reports after the May Democratic primary election.
Cases against Felicia D. Pruitt, who lost a bid for the nomination for 1st Ward Warren City Council; Helen Rucker, who ran unopposed for the nomination for 6th Ward Warren City Council; and Bob Swauger, who lost the nomination for Niles treasurer, were referred to the commission by the county elections board.
A complaint also was lodged against the Hubbard Levy Committee for filing financial statements late.
Inspection contract
WARREN -- For the second year, Trumbull County commissioners have awarded a contract to inspect private homes for lead-based paint to CT Consultants Inc. of Youngstown.
CT Consultants is the only company in the area capable of carrying out the $37,500 contract, said Gary Newbrough, director of the Trumbull County Planning Commission.
