Salem annexation to help Perry Township residents

One councilwoman said the residents have severe, chronic septic system problems.
SALEM -- Some residents north of Salem in Perry Township will soon have relief from their septic problems as council unanimously approved annexation of 184.3 acres into the city, paving the way for the residents to get city sewer services.
Columbiana County commissioners approved the annexation in July. The area is known as the Northeast Sanitary Sewer District and contains 181 homes.
The annexed area includes homes on 15th Street, Shady Lane, Sunset Drive, and Eastview and Westview avenues. City sewers will be extended to those streets.
Council also voted 6-0 to retain Howells and Baird Inc. engineers of Salem to do the engineering for the $1.1 million sewer project.
Residents John Stouffer, Robert E. Williams and Jeffrey L. Biery spearheaded the property owners' annexation efforts.
Councilwoman Nancy Cope said the residents of the annexed area have severe, chronic problems with their septic systems, including sewage backup in their yards.
Cope said that since this annexation was requested, about 50 other nearby property owners in Perry Township have expressed interest in annexing to the city to get city sewer services.
