YOUNGSTOWN -- Patrolman Dave Wilson didn't check his lottery ticket after last week's drawing but had a hunch he'd won. He took the ticket with him when he went to buy his Sunday Vindicator and asked the clerk at Sami Quick Stop on East Midlothian Boulevard to check the numbers.
The clerk told Wilson -- who won the $100,000 kicker -- that they'd been wondering when the winner would show up. The 45-year-old officer went to the lottery commission Tuesday to claim his winnings and learned that he gets a check for about $68,000 in a week.
Wilson, who has been off work since late July after his cruiser was struck, said he expects to return to work soon and the money came at a good time.
Robbery arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Upon Israel Correa's release from St. Elizabeth Health Center Tuesday evening, police arrested him on a charge of aggravated robbery and took him to the county jail.
Correa, 24, is accused of entering Oven Fresh Pizza, 2609 South Ave., with a gun Saturday night in a robbery attempt. He was shot by the owner and fled, ending up at the hospital about 15 minutes later, reports show.
Correa gave Youngstown and Akron addresses. Municipal Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr. set his bond at $250,000 cash or surety.
I-80 crash injures2 from New York
AUSTINTOWN -- A Yonkers, N.Y., woman and a Queens, N.Y., man were in fair condition, both in St. Elizabeth Health Center, after their sport utility vehicle flipped over and landed on its roof on Interstate 80 near the Trumbull County line about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Teresa G. Gallagher, 33, the driver, suffered a broken leg and underwent surgery Tuesday evening. Joseph P. Sheridan, 33, was the passenger. Gallagher was eastbound on I-80 in the passing lane when the SUV went off the road. She tried to get the vehicle back on the pavement, but the SUV flipped numerous times in the median, ending up on its roof in the westbound lanes, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Cruiser, car collide
CANFIELD -- A car struck a Mahoning County sheriff's cruiser Sunday night near the Canfield Fair, a deputy said. The deputy, directing fair traffic at the corner of Leffingwell Road and South Raccoon Road, said that at 9:55 p.m. he was instructed to shut down the northbound lane of South Raccoon Road.
The deputy said he was backing up his cruiser with his overhead lights on when he was struck from behind by another car. There was no damage to either car, the deputy said.
Neighbors up in arms
CANFIELD -- A Killdeer Drive man told deputy sheriffs that his neighbor was on his property Saturday shooting ducks and geese.
He also told deputies that other area residents were having problems with the neighbor's shooting. Deputies told the man that the shooting is a civil matter, and he should speak with an attorney.
Spa license needed
AUSTINTOWN -- Managers of the 77 Spa, 5335 Seventy-Six Drive, have been told that they must get a new business license or they will be cited. Police inspected the spa last week. They described the spa as "neat, clean and orderly," and said employees had valid masseuse licenses. The spa's business license, however, expired in 1998.
Skateboarders cited
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three boys caught on the roof of St. Brendan school on North Schenley Avenue about 12:30 a.m. today with skateboards were issued criminal trespassing citations. The boys' parents were told that if any damage to the roof is found, they will have to pay for repairs.
Newspaper box theft
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that five newspaper boxes were stolen over the weekend.
The boxes were reported stolen from three businesses on Mahoning Avenue. Three boxes sold The Vindicator, one sold the Plain Dealer, and one sold USA Today.
