STONEBORO, Pa. -- A 50-year-old man died of injuries he suffered in an accident involving farm machinery Tuesday morning on Coulson Road, just north of Fredonia Road in Lake Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania State Police said.
William Everett Geer of Franklin, Pa., died while operating equipment used to bag silage for feed at 8:19 a.m., police said.
2 burned by gas fire
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Two men suffered second- and third-degree burns during a natural gas fire this morning at Shenango Refractory.
New Castle Fire Chief James Donston said one man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital and the other was at St. Francis Hospital in New Castle. He would not release their names.
The chief said the men were trying to fix a broken gas meter near a kiln at the McCleary Avenue plant when fire flashed in their faces.
Donston said the gas line had not been turned off and the gas ignited as they worked at 7:29 a.m. today. The plant manager shut off the gas line, putting out the flames, before firefighters arrived, the fire chief said.
I-80 crash injures2 from New York
AUSTINTOWN -- A Yonkers, N.Y., woman and a Queens, N.Y., man were in fair condition, both in St. Elizabeth Health Center, after the sport utility vehicle they occupied flipped over and landed on its roof on Interstate 80 near the Trumbull County line about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Teresa G. Gallagher, 33, the driver, suffered a broken leg and underwent surgery Tuesday evening. Her passenger was Joseph P. Sheridan, 33. Gallagher was eastbound on I-80 in the passing lane when the SUV went off the road.
She tried to get the vehicle back on the pavement, but the SUV flipped numerous times in the median, ending up on its roof in the westbound lanes, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. Gallagher had to be extricated from the vehicle. I-80 westbound was closed for an hour after the accident.
Cruiser, car collide
CANFIELD -- A car struck a Mahoning County sheriff's cruiser Sunday night near the Canfield Fair, a deputy said.
The deputy, who was directing fair traffic at the corner of Leffingwell Road and South Raccoon Road, said that at 9:55 p.m. he was instructed to shut down the northbound lane of South Raccoon Road. The deputy said he was backing up his cruiser with his overhead lights on when he was struck from behind by another car.
There was no damage to either car, the deputy said.
The driver of the other car said the deputy backed into his car.
Neighbors up in arms
CANFIELD -- A Killdeer Drive man told deputy sheriffs that his neighbor was on his property Saturday morning shooting ducks and geese.
The man also told deputies that other area residents were having problems with the neighbor shooting. Deputies told the man that the shooting is a civil matter, and he should speak with an attorney.
A Blue Heron Drive man later told deputies that shotgun pellets had struck a skylight in his house in the past.
The neighbor, who also lives on Killdeer Drive, said one of his friends was responsible for the shooting. Deputies told the neighbor not to shoot until the matter is resolved.
Lottery winnerfinally comes forward
YOUNGSTOWN -- Patrolman Dave Wilson didn't check his lottery ticket after last week's drawing but had a hunch he'd won. He took the ticket with him when he went to buy his Sunday Vindicator and asked the clerk at Sami Quick Stop on East Midlothian Boulevard to check the numbers.
The clerk told Wilson -- who won the $100,000 kicker -- that they'd been wondering when the winner would show up.
The 45-year-old officer went to the lottery commission Tuesday to claim his winnings and learned that he gets a check for about $68,000 in a week.
Wilson, who has been off work since late July after his cruiser was struck, said he expects to return to work soon and the money came at a good time.
