Bazetta ends patrolson weekend day shift
BAZETTA -- Police officers here will no longer work day shifts on the weekends, Police Chief Robert Jacola said.
The decision to stop daytime patrols was made by trustees Tuesday. Jacola said the department has no money to pay officers to work the 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift on Saturdays and Sundays.
If residents need a police officer during those times, they are to call 911 and the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department will be contacted, the chief said.
"It's unfortunate, but it has to be done. We don't have any more money," Jacola said.
The township has police levies on the November ballot.
Man beaten severely
NILES -- Police are investigating the severe beating of a 30-year-old Niles man Tuesday night.
Michael Davis of Third Street was in critical condition this morning in St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
Davis' mother, Marilyn Davis, said her son is being treated for a concussion and fractured facial bones. Police did not have a report available this morning nor anyone to provide information.
Mrs. Davis said her son was found shortly after 10 p.m. along Gas Well Road near a convenience store parking lot on Robbins Avenue.
YMCA fall registration
WARREN -- Registration ends Saturday for Fall I classes at the Trumbull County YMCA.
New this year is Dancercise on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 7:45 p.m. at the Eastwood Branch. The class incorporates dance and aerobic exercise. Dance experience is not necessary.
Registration was to end today for soccer and flag football. A soccer parents meeting was set for tonight at 6:30 in the Eastwood Branch.
A flag football players clinic is Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. The season begins Sept. 15. The clinic and all games will be at the Eastwood Branch.
The Eastwood Branch, meanwhile, will have a teen night for church youth groups from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday.
The event is open to children ages 13 to 18 and the church youth adviser must be present with each group.
Teens will be able to use the gym and the pool. Cost is $2 per person.

Literacy volunteers
WARREN -- The city school district will have a free four-part training workshop for volunteer literacy tutors from 5:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 2, 4, 9 and 11.
Training will be in Thomas Meeting Room at Warren-Trumbull County Public Library.
The workshop will enable volunteers to work with adult beginning readers without requiring prior teaching experience.

Niles man charged
NILES -- A 35-year-old North Main Street man will be in Niles Municipal Court Oct. 5 to face several charges.
The man is charged with receiving stolen property (an All-Terrain Vehicle) and another count of receiving stolen property (a shotgun) and possession of dangerous ordnance (a sawed-off shotgun).
He was arrested Aug. 23 as the result of a long investigation involving Traffic Officer John Marshall and Patrolmen Ron Wright and Jim Robbins, with assistance from Capts. Ken Criswell and Guy Simeone. The Geauga County Sheriff's Office also aided in the investigation.
An additional charge of aggravated trafficking in OxyContin was filed Aug. 31 against him.
Annexation battle
CORTLAND -- City council members here said they will be helping Warren City officials fight an annexation bill recently signed by Gov. Bob Taft.
Mayor Melissa Long said she and several council members decided during Tuesday's council meeting to help Mayor Hank Angelo of Warren collect 5,600 signatures on a petition. Officials want the petitions so they can put the issue on the November 2002 ballot.
The law is set to go into effect Oct. 27, Long said. Long noted that the annexation bill means it will be tougher for all cities to annex land. She said that the new law requires that the annexation be for the "common good" of the area, not just for the property owner.
