School board candidate
YOUNGSTOWN -- Clarence Boles of 3329 Idlewood Ave. has filed to run as a write-in candidate for the two-year unexpired term on the Youngstown Board of Education.
Boles is the first person to file as a write-in candidate for the unexpired term. Former board member Don Hanni III says he plans to file as a write-in but had not as of late this morning.
There are nine candidates for three four-year terms on the board, but no one filed nominating petitions for the unexpired term. The seat will be filled by the person with the most write-in votes. The deadline to register as a write-in candidate is Sept. 17.
Assault arrests
BOARDMAN -- Two men were arrested at the Holiday Inn on South Avenue early Monday, accused of punching a 34-year-old Chicago man who was staying there, police reports show.
The victim said his assailants followed him into the hotel lobby, insulting him and his friends before a fight ensued.
A 22-year-old Fairfield, Conn., man and a 21-year-old man from Highland Park, Ill., face charges of misdemeanor assault.
Indecent exposure
STRUTHERS -- A 46-year-old Struthers woman, who was jogging on Wetmore Drive at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, near Mill Creek MetroParks Yellow Creek Park, said she saw a man who had his genitals exposed in the woods.
The woman kept running and began to scream and was picked up by a relative. The police went to the area, but the man was gone. The suspect, a 21-year-old Hubbard man, was arrested later that day by Struthers police and identified by the woman. No charges have been filed.
Arrested after threats
BOARDMAN -- A 34-year-old Youngstown man was arrested early Saturday, accused of carrying a concealed weapon. Police said they found a steel socket wrench hidden in his car.
Police reports said the suspect had been accused late Friday of entering the Glenwood Avenue home of his brother-in-law without permission. He also was accused of making threatening phone calls the same day to a Trenholm Road man who lives with the suspect's sister.
The sister said her son had received threatening calls from the suspect on Friday, too, and the brother-in-law's son told police the suspect had threatened to kill the Trenholm Road man with the "bar" from his car.
Police found the wrench after pulling the suspect over in his brother-in-law's driveway.
The suspect was also charged with criminal trespassing and menacing by stalking. He faces a hearing Thursday in Mahoning County Court here.
Boy Scouts get grant
WARREN -- The Greater Western Reserve Council, Boy Scouts of America, received a grant from Home Savings & amp; Loan and Butler Wick & amp; Co.
The $8,500 grant will be used to buy new cots and replace tent platforms at Camp Stambaugh in Canfield Township. Gary Erlinger, executive director of the Greater Western Reserve Council, said this grant will benefit more than 2,500 Scouts and adults who use Camp Stambaugh each year.
Emergency landing
BERLIN -- A hot air balloon landed in Berlin Reservoir, near U.S. Route 224, Saturday evening, and Deputy Stephen Lewis, working lake patrol for the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department, reached the crash site in his boat.
Because of shallow water near the shoreline, Lewis had to get into the water to reach the balloon occupants. Both the operator, a Sharpsville, Pa., man, and his passenger, a Newton Falls man, said they were not hurt.
Sprayed in the face
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a man sprayed a woman with a stinging fluid in the parking lot of Wedgewood Plaza.
The woman said she was sitting in the passenger seat of a car in the parking lot early Sunday morning when a man approached and asked for a ride. The driver of the car said no and then began to pull away.
The woman said her eyes began to sting.
Spied upon
AUSTINTOWN -- A woman told police that a man spied on her Sunday afternoon while she was getting dressed at a South Raccoon Road tanning salon.
The woman, 21, said she was getting dressed when she noticed the man looking at her over a wall. She said she screamed and the man got down from the wall.
An employee of the tanning salon then asked the man to leave. The man refused, however. The man later told police that he did not look at the woman.
