WARREN -- Karen Stith, 22, of Fox Run Road, Cortland, was admitted to Trumbull Memorial Hospital with a pelvic fracture she suffered in a two-car accident Saturday evening at East Market Street and North Road. She was in stable condition Sunday.
Stith's son, Bailey, 3, was treated and released after the 7 p.m. accident.
Warren police said Stith was southbound on North Road, when a westbound car driven by Glenn Luther broadsided her.
Luther, of Howland, an intern who was on a photo assignment for The Vindicator, was cited with running a red light.
Stith had to be cut free of her car.
Teen faces pot charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 16-year-old Wilson High School freshman was arrested about 9:15 a.m. Friday after an assistant principal discovered about $25 worth of suspected marijuana in a plastic bag in the teen's sock, police records show.
The administrator searched the boy after noticing that he smelled like marijuana. A school patrol officer made the arrest on a charge of possession of narcotics under bulk amount.
The teen was issued a summons and released.
Girl, 17, attacked
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old girl was beaten by two strangers as she walked in her neighborhood along Dewey Avenue near Market Street early Saturday, police reports show.
Police were told the girl was jumped by two women about 20, who punched her, knocked her to the ground and kicked her.
The girl was able to flee. She suffered bruises to an eye, cheek and ear and scratches to her neck.
Cuyahoga River canoeing
BURTON -- Mill Creek MetroParks is sponsoring a canoe trip from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday on the Cuyahoga River near Burton, Ohio. Naturalist Bob Faber will provide canoes and serve as a guide. Arrested in break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown police officer who spotted a man kneeling outside an apartment window ended up arresting two Youngstown men.
The officer spotted a 38-year-old Howard Street man kneeling outside the window of a Mahoning Avenue apartment about 10 p.m. Saturday. When he approached, he found a 39-year-old Millet Avenue man crawling out of a nearby broken window with a radio and arrested him. Both men arrested are in the Mahoning County Jail.
Food bank fire
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) -- Nearly 300,000 pounds of food were destroyed by fire when lightning struck a warehouse owned by the Second Harvest Foodbank.
The food bank's manager, Bill Leaver, said the lost food, valued at $337,000, was enough to feed people from 181 agencies in three counties for a month.
The fire Thursday night left two offices at the site relatively unscathed, but the 12,000-square-foot warehouse space is unusable.
A neighbor reported the lightning strike at the warehouse at about 6:30 p.m. during a storm that dumped nearly 5 inches of rain in three hours.
The next step for food bank officials is to find a new warehouse, said Vince Chase, director of Catholic Social Services for Clark, Champaign and Logan counties, which runs the food bank.
Food will arrive soon, but without adequate warehouse space, the supplies don't help much.
Volunteers at pantries and soup kitchens in the three-county area will be told to tighten their belts until the Springfield operation gets back on its feet, Leaver said.
Other Ohio food banks have rallied, sending supplies to Springfield. But space that can accommodate food storage will be expensive.
"Money is our first priority so that we can reopen somewhere. Then we can bring in additional food," said Lisa Hamler-Podolski, executive director of the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks.
Gunman's sentencing
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Allegheny County judge who will sentence mass-shooter Richard Baumhammers said a request from Latvian officials to spare his life would likely have "little significance" on the death sentence.
Judge Jeffrey Manning received a letter Friday from Latvian Embassy First Secretary Uvis Blums asking him to spare the 36-year-old unemployed Mount Lebanon attorney when sentencing him Thursday.
Baumhammers was convicted and sentenced to death by a county jury in May for killing five people of various ethnic groups in a hate-driven shooting rampage in April 2000.
