COLUMBIANA CORNER Bike-a-thon on Sept. 15 to aid St. Jude's hospital

A bike-a-thon to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will be Sept. 15 in Columbiana. Jill Barnard of Fairfield Township is the local coordinator.
St. Jude officials stated in a press release that St. Jude bike-a-thons nationwide this year are dedicated to Destini, a 9-year-old who was admitted to St. Jude at age 3 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Three years of chemotherapy at St. Jude ended in 1997, and Destini is now cancer free and enjoys riding her bicycle and roller skating, the hospital reported.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas. The hospital opened in 1962 to combat catastrophic diseases such as leukemia, Hodgkin's disease and sickle-cell anemia that afflict children. St. Jude officials said continued donations since the hospital opened in 1962 enable St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to cover all costs of care beyond those covered by insurance.

Shade trees: Leetonia Village Administrator Gary Phillips reminds residents the village's shade tree commission issues permits for planting on village rights of way.
Curb lawns, sidewalks, alleys and streets are part of the village right of way, and are to be maintained by property owners, he said. Phillips said, however, that property owners must obtain permission from village officials before planting, painting or otherwise altering the curb lawn or sidewalk.
KSU enrollment: Kent State University's Salem campus is starting the 2001-2002 academic year with a record-high enrollment.
The branch campus, along state Route 45, south of Salem, has 1,168 students enrolled for the first day of classes, KSU officials recently reported.
The large number partly is the result of solid recruiting efforts and quality instruction, the university said.
The regional campus has been in operation for 30 years.
Hazardous products: For the second consecutive year, Columbiana County residents will have an opportunity to rid their homes of products that can be hazardous to the environment if not disposed of properly.
The Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Joint Solid Waste Management District is collecting the materials from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Columbiana County highway department, 315 S. Market St., Lisbon.
Materials will be accepted free. Items that will be taken include paints, thinners, cleaning products, pesticides, gasoline, kerosene, vehicle batteries and propane cylinders.
Phillips also noted residents must keep trees and bushes trimmed back to prevent overhang onto village rights of way. The village will maintain rights of way by trimming as needed if property owners do not, Phillips said.
