KEYSTONE CLIPS Lawmaker offers tips on intrusion protection

Are you tired of being bugged by telemarketer calls and junk mail? Pennsylvania state Rep. Rod Wilt of Greenville, R-17th, offered some tips on how to protect oneself against such intrusions.
People can ask that their names be removed from national telephone solicitation lists by writing to The Direct Marketing Association, Telephone Preference Service, P.O. Box 9014, Farmingdale, N.Y. 11735-9014.
Telemarketers must also maintain their own "do not call" lists and people called by a telemarketer can ask to be placed on that company's list, Wilt said.
People can also get their name removed mailing lists by writing to Mail Preference Service of The Direct Marketing Association at P.O. Box 9008, Farmingdale, N.Y., 11735-9008, he said. If you don't want any more credit card offers in your mail, call 1-888-567-8688 or write to the three major credit bureaus in this country; Equifax Inc. Options, P.O. Women motorcyclists: So you think only macho men want Harley Davidson motorcycles. Three of the last four winners of new Harleys given away at Quaker Steak & amp; Lube in downtown Sharon have been women.
Lindsay Woge of Hermitage won the last one, a Harley Davidson Sportster, in the second Harley giveaway of this season on Aug. 22.
Quaker Steak began holding Bike Night once a week in 1996, initially drawing 150 motorcycles, but it became so popular that it was expanded to every Monday and Wednesday during the summer, consistently drawing more than 5,000 bikes on a single night. The next giveaway is scheduled for Monday and the final one of the season is set for Sept. 19.
Race for reading: Reading could be the ticket for one lucky teen-ager to attend a Nascar race and meet star Ward Burton.
The New Castle Library is participating in the 2001 Best Books for Young Adults contest, sponsored by Hershey Milk and the American Library Association.
Those ages 12-18 can select a book designated by the library and write an essay on why they would recommend it to a friend and how it's meaningful or inspirational to others their age. The essay must be given to a sponsoring librarian.
The winner will receive a trip to Homestead Miami Speedway on Nov. 11. All contest entries must be to the library before Oct. 12.
Sewage upgrades: Two Lawrence County townships are getting some help with their sewage upgrades.
Wilmington Township will receive $1,207 and Perry Township will receive $1,552 from the Department of Environmental Protection's sewage facilities grant enforcement program. The money will be used to reimburse the municipalities for 50 percent of their eligible expenses for enforcing the state's sewage provisions.
