Woman sues parkon behalf of minor child
WARREN -- A Niles woman is suing Willow Lake Park in Champion on behalf of her minor son, saying he was severely injured when a swing struck him in the head.
Luann Kelley of Summit Street filed the lawsuit earlier this week in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. The case is assigned to Judge Andrew Logan.
The lawsuit contends Kelley's son, Dex Filo, suffered permanent injury to his head and neck when he was hit June 11, 1999, while swimming.
The defendant is listed as Green Grass Management Corp., doing business as Willow Lake Park, 6863 Mahoning Ave. N.W. Park officials and Kelley's attorney, Lynn Sfara Bruno, were unavailable to comment.
The lawsuit says the park's negligence will cause Filo indefinite suffering and seeks in excess of $25,000. Filo's age wasn't given.
Defamation suit filedagainst police chief
LISBON -- An East Liverpool woman is suing East Liverpool Police Chief Mike McVay for $50,000, claiming he defamed her in a statement he made.
In a lawsuit filed earlier this week in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court, Norma DeSarro, 802 Park Blvd., claims that McVay stated that DeSarro would "fudge" an application for transfer of a liquor license. DeSarro said the statement was untrue and has embarrassed and defamed her. McVay declined to comment Friday, saying he has yet to see the lawsuit.
Crack found on man
SHARON, Pa. -- When police asked Tommi L. Odem, 53, of French Street, Farrell, if they could search him after they found him walking at Budd Avenue and Dock Street around 3:30 a.m. Friday, he consented, police said.
Officers said they found a crack pipe and a small amount of suspected crack cocaine in his pockets. He was arraigned later in the day on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and public drunkenness and freed on his own recognizance.
Dravecky to speakto cancer survivors
WARREN -- Dave Dravecky, former Major League Baseball pitcher and cancer survivor, will be the keynote speaker at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital's 11th annual Cancer Survivorship Day from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 at W.D. Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. N.W.
Lynda Gaug will provide music and Dravecky's wife, Jan, will speak at the event, which is free and open to cancer survivors and their families and friends. It will culminate with a live butterfly release.
KSU bus kills mantrying to cross street
KENT (AP) -- A Kent State University bus hit and killed a 50-year-old man who apparently fell while attempting to cross the street Friday afternoon.
"It was one of the worst things I've seen in my life," said Kate Gordy, an attendant at a nearby Clark gas station. "People around here come inside all the time. I could know him."
Authorities withheld the man's name because relatives had not been notified.
Kent city police said they did not expect to file charges against the driver.
Police said despite afternoon rain it was unlikely that road conditions played a part in the accident.
