POLAND -- Library patrons can enjoy a cup of java at "Chapters" while leafing through chapters of a favorite book.
Mahoning County's first in-library cafe will bear the name "Chapters" thanks to two women who entered the name in a Name-the-Cafe Contest for the new Poland Library on South Main Street.
The winners: Contest winners are Lori Begnaud of Poland and Michelle Caruso of Youngstown. Both women submitted the same name. They will each receive a prize of a cookie-a-day for one year.
"Chapters" was one of 825 entries in the contest sponsored by the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County with the cafe's owners, Thymely Events Inc.
The winner was chosen because it is catchy, easy to remember and is connected to books, said Janet S. Loew, library communications and public relations director.
Second place went to Brian and Kimberly Carbaugh of Poland for "Mythic Mocha." They win a $25 cafe gift certificate.
"Dewey's" won third place for Poland residents Sandy Shetler, Carla Swanson and Jackie Quinn and Darlene Basista of Lowellville. Each receives a coffee press with coffee and timer.
Fourth-place winner was 6-year-old Colin Rody of Poland who suggested "Stirring Stories." He receives a Steeping Sundries assortment of teas with a coffee mug and biscotti.
In fifth place, with "The Bookery," was Robert Locke of Poland, winning AM Coffee Essentials of biscotti, chocolate, coffee and a coffee mug.
Hard to pick winner: Loew said the number of entries was unexpected and choosing a winner was a difficult task. She said some names were rejected because of their similarity to trademarked names, such as "Starbooks."
Other entries submitted include "Green Eggs and Hamlet," "Snacks in the Stacks," "Dickens' Pickens," "Gulp Fiction," "The Sage Page," "Havajava Readalotta," "Read 'Em and Eat," "Page Turner Cafe" and "Keats and Treats."
The cafe, a first in Mahoning County libraries, will be owned and operated by Thymely Events. The library will lease space to the company and owns rights to the name.
The new $6 million, two-level library building is scheduled to open in late November.
The new facility is four times larger than the old building and will offer a children's activity area and computer work stations for Internet access. Library services will be on the second level, with the cafe, a bookstore, a recycling exhibit, and a 300-person capacity meeting room on the first level.
The exterior includes a clock tower and cupola and a walkway through Poland Woods.
