Divers qualify
CLARION, Pa. -- Senior Brandi Goettsch, junior Mandi Smail and freshman Kalyn Leveto of the Youngstown State diving team qualified for the NCAA Zone C Diving Championship in both the 1 meter and 3 meter events.
YSU defeated Clarion 38-22.

Copeland Hillshosts prep event
COLUMBIANA -- Copeland Hills Golf Course recently held its first annual Scholarship Cup, an invitational three-man scramble for area high school golf teams.
Niles won this year's event with a score of 66. The team included Patrick Gray, Jason Shelton and Jon Sliwinski. Five schools competed and each team was permitted to enter two three-man teams.
Poland finished second and third. The team of Ryan Neely, Tom Sweeney and Mike Zampini shot 67, while the team of Dan Folkwein, Dan Ramon and John Sweeney finished at 68.
United and East Palestine tied for fourth with 71s, while East Palestine took sixth with 80, Crestview seventh at 83 and United eighth at 87.
Lisa Becka, LPGA teaching professional and her brother Jack Becka, PGA Class A professional, organized the event, which also featured an appearance by PGA Senior Tour professional Jerry McGee, while LPGA Tour standout Marianne Morris served as rules interpreter for the event.
A total of $2,300 in scholarship money was won by each of the teams, with Niles taking home $1,000 for scholarships. The first place trophy, a huge stone monument, was donated by Bob Berg of Richardson Monuments in Lisbon. It will rotate at the winning school each year.
Corporate sponsors for the tournament were Pepsi and Titleist-Foot Joy.
Golfers honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Five members of the Warren Kennedy boys golf team were selected to the All-Northeast Ohio District Division III first team.
Eagles on the honor team are Kevin Costello, Chris Macali, Jim Scheiber, Jason Kokrak and Colin Clemente.
Also on the first team is Cory Schneider of Sebring.
On the Div. I second team is Alan Dattilio of West Branch, while earning honorable mention were Brandon Pauley of Canfield and Jesse Ritchie of West Branch.
Eric Susa of Champion earned second team in Div. II, while on the honorable mention squad were Greg Hall of Champion and Jim Demidovich of Cardinal Mooney.
Earning first team recognition in girls was Alexandra Casi of East Palestine, while on the second team was Kelly Baytos of Warren Kennedy and Felicia Ciotola of Canfield.
Mollie Porter and Elia Sorice of Canfield and Jennifer Lazor of Warren Kennedy made honorable mention.
D'Amico gets ace
HUBBARD -- Bob D'Amico of New Middletown made a hole-in-one at Pine Lakes Golf Course.
He aced the No. 6 hole, 179 yards, with a 5-wood, and his foursome included John Cox, Bob Pushay and Rich Durochia.
Southington beginsplayoffs Friday
SOUTHINGTON -- The Southington High football team will play its Division VI playoff game Friday against Tiffin Calvert at 7:30 p.m. It originally was scheduled for Saturday.
Chaney, Poland playoff tickets
Tickets for the Chaney-Walsh Jesuit playoff football game Friday go on sale Wednesday at Palko's Mill Creek Service Station on Schenley Avenue during regular business hours and until noon Friday. Chaney will sell tickets at the school Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. All fans in loges must have tickets.
Tickets for Friday's Poland-West Geauga game can be purchased at all Poland schools and Trolio's. There are no passes accepted or reserved seats for sale at the gate. Only reserved seat holders for the season may purchase their same seats at the athletic office this week. Everyone must have a ticket.
All tickets are $5.
Boardman's Andresis top SVC player
YOUNGSTOWN -- Boardman senior tackle Tom Andres (6-4, 255) was named Steel Valley Conference player of the week. Andres had seven hits, one assist, two tackles and forced an interception in Boardman's 30-0 win over Fitch last week.
Wilson's Laneis City pick
YOUNGSTOWN -- Woodrow Wilson sophomore Shawn Lane was named the City Series player of the week. Lane rushed 15 times for 145 yards and three touchdowns and he intercepted two passes.
Hubbard's Smithtotals 4,000 yards
HUBBARD -- Hubbard tailback Anthony Smith's rushing yardage was 245 yards in Friday's win over Brookfield. It enabled the senior to pass the 4,000-yard mark for his career. Smith was not included among Weekend Leaders in Monday's edition.

Penguins' Lemieuxhas hip surgery
PITTSBURGH -- Mario Lemieux had arthroscopic hip surgery Monday and is expected to miss the next 3-to-4 weeks of the season.
