GREENVILLE Mayor
The Nov. 6 mayoral race pits a two-term incumbent against a political newcomer who is the leader of a Committee of Concerned Taxpayers group formed about two years ago in response to the borough's decision to implement a 20-mill tax increase over two years to fund recreation and other projects.
CLIFFORD H. HARRIGER (R)
Age: 75.Home: 50 Columbia Ave.Employment: Incumbent mayor, retired from the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad.Education: High school graduate.Experience: Former borough councilman and has been directly involved in much of the government-led improvements made in the Greenville area.Family: Wife, E. Ann; six daughters; nine grandchildren.Priority: To complete the projects started by the borough and make the town a place to stop and shop, not a drive-through community.
CARMEN A. SURANO (D)
Age: 69.Home: 111 N. Second St.Employment: Self-employed barber/stylist for 42 years.Education: Graduate of St. Michael's High School and the Ora Jean Barber Academy.Experience: Lifelong borough resident as well as a respected business owner.Family: Widower; three sons and two daughters.Priority: To reduce taxes so that the elderly can enjoy and afford homes that they have lived in most of their married lives and to bring a grocery store to the downtown area.
