Students raise money
VIENNA -- The senior class at Mathews High School raised more than $800 for the American Red Cross New York City Disaster Relief fund.
They stayed after school Sept. 17 and made 800 red, white and blue ribbons and sold them for the next two weeks for $1 each. The ribbons were sold at businesses in Vienna, Fowler and surrounding communities.
The money raised was sent to the relief fund earlier this month.
Twenty-five seniors participated.
Group makes donation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Simon Property Group and its Simon Youth Foundation are making a donation in excess of $1 million to each of four agencies in support of Sept. 11 relief activities.
The recipients are the Red Cross Liberty Fund, the New York Police & amp; Fire Widows & amp; Children's Benefit Fund, The Families of Freedom Fund and the Factory Mutual Family Fund.
Efforts at Southern Park Mall in Boardman, combined with those at Simon's other 190 malls, bring the total Simon contribution to $4.8 million.
Southern Park Mall joined Cumulus Broadcasting and the local CBS/Fox television affiliate for a "Celebrate America" rally that generated $5,000 for the Red Cross.
The youth foundation has pledged all wishing well and fountain coin proceeds from Sept. 11 through the end of the year, expected to top $250,000.
Proceeds from Simon mall sales of the Glory calendar are being donated. The calendars are $10 each.
Simon also is participating in an effort called United We Stand with the owners of more than 400 malls and shopping centers nationwide.
