BOARDMAN -- Halloween events, including haunted hayrides, a bonfire and storytelling, are to resume in Boardman Park today and Sunday, weather permitting, after high winds forced their cancellation Friday.
Dan Slagle, park superintendent, said a tree fell Thursday across the hike and bike trail used for the hayrides.
The lighted pumpkin display went on as usual Friday and will continue nightly until 10 p.m. through Wednesday.
Kids' insurance
YOUNGSTOWN -- In celebration of Make a Difference Day, the March of Dimes and Kmart were to join forces today to provide families with information about free or low-cost health-care insurance for children.
March of Dimes volunteers were to distribute applications for Ohio's Children's Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP) or Medicaid at area Kmart stores.
Low- to moderate-income families are eligible.
Man and womanplead innocent
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lester Scott, 41, and Shauna Berry Scott, 39, both of Elm Street, Youngstown, pleaded innocent to drug charges during arraignment Friday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
They were indicted Thursday by a county grand jury on charges of cocaine trafficking, possessing crack cocaine and drug possession.
City police say they found crack cocaine during a search of their home earlier this week.
Police said they also found syrup bottles filled with Tussinex, which is a prescription cough syrup, marijuana and prescription pills.
10-year sentence
YOUNGSTOWN -- Warren V. Wright, 22, of Gypsy Lane, was sentenced Friday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to 10 years in prison.
A jury convicted him Oct. 5 of felonious assault and a firearm specification.
Judge Robert Lisotto imposed a seven-year sentence for felonious assault, which involved the shooting of 32-year-old Maurice Wright of Estate Circle outside the Pourhouse Bar on Mahoning Avenue in March 2000.
The firearm specification carries a mandatory three-year sentence, which must be served before the felonious assault term.
Wright was given credit for 272 days he served in the county jail awaiting trial.
Assisted-living addition
HOWLAND -- Shepherd of the Valley will ceremoniously break ground Sunday for an addition to its assisted-living building, 4100 North River Road.
When construction is completed in about a year, the facility will offer a 40-bed skilled nursing unit and 26 heavy-care assisted-living beds in addition to the existing assisted-living residence and independent-living condominiums.
Groundbreaking ceremonies and a reception will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Staff will wear gold hard hats and carpenters' aprons during the festivities. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided.
Career center youthsto have moms dinner
LISBON -- Get Mom Out of the Kitchen Day, an all-you-can-eat Sunday dinner, will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Columbiana County Career Center.
The event is sponsored by the career center's youth clubs. Cost is $6 for adults, $3.50 for children 3 to 12, and free for children under 3.
The menu will consist of antipasto salad, fettuccine with creamy Alfredo sauce, topped with marinated chicken breast; linguini with marinara, meatballs and Italian sausage; salad with choice of dressing, garlic bread sticks, strawberry shortcake with ice cream, and coffee, ice tea or punch.
Bridge closing
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Covert's Crossing Bridge in Union and Mahoning townships will be closed Tuesday through Thursday for repairs.
The county-owned, wood-deck bridge is slated for replacement sometime in the next few years.
County officials say they plan to keep it open to traffic until it is replaced, but will do periodic work on it.
Veterans Day at school
CANFIELD -- Canfield Village Middle School will have a Veterans Day assembly at 9 a.m. Nov. 9 in the school's front gymnasium.
The assembly will include patriotic presentations and speeches by veterans. The assembly is open to veterans and Canfield residents.
