YOUNGSTOWN -- A name from the past came to the forefront in Woodrow Wilson's 34-8 victory over Canton Timken on Friday at Stambaugh Stadium.
The name is Garcia Lane, a former gridiron great for Youngstown South, Ohio State and the Kansas City Chiefs. Three of his sons play for the Redmen (2-8, 1-2 City Series).
Two of them were big contributors to Wilson's victory.
Sophomore quarterback Shawn Lane scored Wilson's first two touchdowns, both in the first quarter on 1-yard runs. He engineered a 12-play 64-yard drive and had a key 18-yard run on a keeper for the first score and a 25-yard run off a broken play that set up the second score.
Not done: The sophomore wasn't through for the night because in the third quarter he broke off a 67-yard touchdown run when he swung outside and scampered down the right sideline, out-running the Trojans' secondary.
On the night, Shawn ran the ball 15 times for 121 of Wilson's 251 yards on the ground and he also intercepted two passes.
"I couldn't run like I did without the blocking that my guys gave me on every run," Shawn said. "Defensively, I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time."
Shawn's older brother, senior Troy Lane, ran for 42 yards in the game and scored Wilson's third touchdown in the second quarter on a 5-yard run and he also ran for the two point conversion.
"We deserve to win because we played hard all year and it was good to see our season end on a positive note," Troy said.
The final touchdown on the evening for the Redmen was scored on a 27-yard run by senior Quinn Humphries, who ran 15 times for 85 yards. "We stuck together through a hard schedule this season and this victory is very satisfying," Humphries said.
Heap of praise: Praise came from the two Lane brothers and Humphries about senior captain Anthony Floyd, who works as a guard and tackle offensively and on defense had five solo and 11 total tackles.
" I'm proud of this team. These are great kids who endured a tough season," Wilson coach Mark Lyden said. "We worked hard this week on overcoming a tough loss the week before against Rayen and this victory is a result of that hard work."
The Trojans (3-7, 1-2) rushed for 162 yards, with standout running back Kelvin Hope carrying 15 times for 105 yards.
Steubenville 27, Rayen 6: STEUBENVILLE -- Nate Hubbard ran 24 times for 96 yards and touchdowns covering 4 and 7 yards to lead the Big Red (8-2).
Steubenville was in first place in the Division III, Region 11 of the computer ratings this week.
The Tigers (1-9) were paced by Ron Lampkin, who ran 11 times for 82 yards, and he hit on 2-of-14 passes for 1 yard with an interception.
The Tigers fell behind 21-0 at the break and 27-0 entering the final frame. C.J. Ladson found Jerome Betts for a 66-yard touchdown completion as Rayen averted the shutout.
As a team, Rayen rushed 19 times for 108 yards and completed 3-of-15 passes for 66 yards. The Tigers lost both their fumbles and were penalized five times for 52 yards.
