CROSS COUNTRY Regional championships



All races at Boardman High School. The top four teams in Division I and II and the top three teams in Div. III, along with the top 15 individuals not on qualifying teams, qualify for the state meet at Scioto Downs in Columbus on Nov. 3.
BOYSDIVISION I
When: 2:50 p.m.Area teams: None.Also competing (18): Hudson, Alliance, Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Medina, Lodi, Cloverleaf, Solon, Mentor, Eastlake North, Willoughby South, Chardon, Lyndhurst Brush, Massillon Jackson, Massillon Perry, North Canton, Hoover, Canton GlenOak, Wooster.Area individual: Tom Albani (Boardman).Who to watch: Albani finished second at districts and sixth at regionals last year -- look for him to qualify for state. Massillon Jackson won both the boys and girls district championships at Malone. Perry, GlenOak and Hoover will challenge.
DIVISION II
When: 2:05 p.m.Area teams (4): Mooney, Girard, Struthers, Southeast.Also competing (15): Canton Central Catholic, Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit, Mogadore, Field, Copley, Tallmadge, Minerva, Painesville Harvey, Hunting Valley, University School, Jefferson Area, Ashtabula Edgewood, Perry, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.Area individuals: Ryan Petrick (Champion), Matt Scott and Jon Cosma (West Branch), Avinash Bhitia (Lakeview), Corey Chick (East Palestine), Robert Vogt (Salem).Who to watch: Mooney -- led by senior Joe Taylor, who took third at districts. Girard and Struthers don't have an individual standout, relying instead on overall team strength. District champ CVCA, led by Anthony Mion and Matt Buzek, will be tough. Northwest senior Dave Howard finished second in the state last year and could win it this year.
DIVISION III
When: 1:20 p.m.Area teams (4): McDonald, Maplewood, LaBrae, South Range.Also competing (8): Ashland Mapleton, East Canton, Norwayne, Dalton, Gates Mills Gilmour Academy, Burton Berkshire, Middlefield Cardinal, Gates Mills Hawken.Area individuals: Todd McDevitt (Lisbon), Danny Simpson and Justin Holiday (Leetonia), David Mealey (Springfield), Luke McCluggage (Jackson-Milton), Tom Andriko (Lordstown).Who to watch: McDonald and Maplewood. They ran 1-2 at districts, and both teams will use this race as a tune-up for their final showdown in Columbus. Mealey, Parson and McCluggage have the best chance to advance.
GIRLSDIVISION I
When: 12:35 p.m.Area teams: None.Also competing (16): Cleveland Heights, Mentor, Mayfield, Lyndhurst Brush, Painesville Riverside, Madison, Medina, Kent Roosevelt, Alliance, Hudson, Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Massillon Jackson, Canton GlenOak, North Canton Hoover, Massillon Perry, Wadsworth.Area individuals: Brittany Durkin (Boardman), Kristen Piersante (Canfield).Who to watch: Durkin and Piersante will need to run their strongest races of the season to qualify for state. Massillon Jackson is the favorite.
DIVISION II
When: 11:30 p.m.Area teams (4): Champion, Girard, Mooney, Southeast.Also competing (12): Perry, Cleveland Heights Beaumont, Jefferson Area, Aurora, Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, Minerva, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit, Marlington, Richfield Revere, Canton Central Catholic, Medina Highland.Area individuals: Colleen Moran (Poland), Brandy Sauerwein (Salem), Lisa Davies and Megan Cingcade (West Branch), Candice Eagon (Struthers).Who to watch: Champion and Girard finished 1-2 at districts and were separated by just a point. Mooney has experience and Val Zajac will likely advance if the Cardinal team does not. Davies will challenge CVCA's senior standout Amy Arnold.
DIVISION III
When: 11:05 p.m.Area teams (5): McDonald, South Range, Maplewood, United, Lisbon.Also competing (7): Gates Mills Hawken, Gates Mills Gilmour Academy, Kirtland, Burton Berkshire, Pymatuning Valley, Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas, Ashland Mapleton.Area individuals: Carrie Hart (LaBrae), Melissa Dipanfeilo (Leetonia), Christine Miller (Badger).Who to watch: The McDonald girls, led by Jen Wenhold, are running well. South Range's Julie Nemergut is a threat to advance if the Raiders do not. Aquinas will be tough.
