BOYS SOCCER Mooney cruises into district final
The Cardinals scored a 6-0 win over Maplewood, to advance against Champion Saturday.
STRUTHERS -- Mark Seddon, Christo Frangopolous and Pat Walker each scored two goals, as Cardinal Mooney High blanked Maplewood 6-0 in a Division III district semifinal boys soccer game Thursday at Valley Sports.
Frangopolous gave the Cardinals (13-3-1) a 1-0 lead when he scored an unassisted goal 5 minutes, 30 seconds into the contest.
Seddon followed with his first goal, and Frangopolous got another goal on an assist by Seddon.
Seddon then scored his second goal on an assist by D.J. Meyers, giving Mooney a 4-0 lead at intermission.
Draws defenders: "Kiki Willis is a constant threat for us, and although he didn't score tonight, he drew the attention of their defenders, which opened up the scoring opportunities for Seddon and Frangopolous," Mooney coach Len Krispinsky said.
In the second half, two goals were scored in a three-minute span by Mooney's Pat Walker, the first on an assist by Alex Simon and the other on an assist by Seddon.
Mooney was on the offensive throughout the entire game, and limited Maplewood (10-3-4) to just one shot on goal.
Factors: "The field conditions sort of took some of the skill and foot speed away," said Krispinsky. "Despite that, they gave us quite a game.
"We took advantage of everything they gave us," he added. "We were very patient with our game in the first half. After a few minutes we found that their left side and middle of the field were open and we tried to exploit that.
"The second half we kind of lost focus and it took us a little time to get back into the rhythm of the game."
Reigrut sets mark: The Cardinals dominated with 14 shots on goal. Mooney goalkeeper Tim Reigrut set a school record with his ninth shutout.
Mooney, the top seed, will play second-seeded Champion Saturday at Valley Sports at 7 p.m. in the district title game.
"Champion has a quality program and is well-coached," said Krispinsky. "We played them a couple of weeks ago and won 4-0.
"We expect this to be tougher because it is very difficult to beat a team two times in a season."
