Men charged with theft
STRUTHERS -- Two men suspected of auto theft were arrested at 5:19 a.m. Wednesday after Struthers Safety Service Director John Sveda saw them abandon a car at a Garfield Street parking lot earlier that morning. Police located four people in a red Chevrolet Cavalier and arrested a 24-year-old Girard man and a 24-year-old Youngstown man on possessing criminal tools. They are being held in Struthers City Jail on charges of receiving stolen property and criminal damaging/endangering in the theft of a car on Creed Street and the attempted theft of two others. Two women in the car were not charged. The women told police they saw the suspects get inside a vehicle they didn't own. The women said the men also tried to steal cars on Argonne Avenue and Ridgeway Street.

POLAND -- The Poland PTA Council is sponsoring a Meet the Candidates night for board of education candidates at 7 p.m. today at Poland High School auditorium. Four candidates are vying for two seats.
Resource council
YOUNGSTOWN -- New members of the District 6 Natural Resource Assistance Council are Charles Tieche, Richard A. Houk, Walter Avdey, Darlene M. St. George, Brian K. Banbury, Heather M. Moser, Susan E. Dicken, Peter L. Morabito, Thomas F. Halloway, Gary E. Newbrough and John P. Pierko. They were appointed earlier this month.
The 11-member council was formed by Eastgate Regional Council of Governments to prioritize and fund projects under the Green Space Conservation portion of the Clean Ohio Fund. Mahoning and Trumbull Counties were allocated about $1.4 million by the Ohio Public Works Commission to fund the projects.
Volleyball in Girard
GIRARD -- City Recreation Director Mark Zuppo has scheduled a meeting for 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Girard City Gym for men and women interested in joining a volleyball league. Participants must be city residents or Girard High School graduates.
Man reports ID theft
BOARDMAN -- A 71-year-old township man reported to police Wednesday that someone had used his name and Social Security number to buy three vehicles, police reports show. The man said he had received a phone call from GMAC Financing regarding a Chevy truck and a motorcycle that had been bought by a person using his identity with a different birth dateand a Michigan driver's license. The man said he also discovered that a Toyota convertible had been bought in Connecticut by someone using his identity.
Planting postponed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A nasty weather forecast is postponing Saturday's tulip and daffodil bulb-planting project downtown.
The Streetscape group is rescheduling the project for a week, until 8 a.m. Nov. 3. Volunteers will meet in front of BW-3 restaurant.
Cold weather and snow are forecast for Saturday.
The bulbs will be planted now so they will bloom in spring.
Traffic safety awards
Officials from Canfield and McDonald recently received traffic safety awards from the Ohio Motorists Safety Foundation.
Canfield officials received the award for a record of no pedestrian fatalities for 24 consecutive years. McDonald officials received the award for no pedestrian fatalities last year.
The officials received the awards earlier this month at an American Automobile Association Community Safety Award luncheon in Independence, Ohio.
