SALEM 2 arrested in theft await court

Police said one man spent the night in a vacant Leetonia house.
SALEM -- Two Farrell, Pa., men who police say brought a stolen pickup truck from Hermitage, Pa., to Leetonia remain in the Columbiana County Jail awaiting court appearances before Judge Robert C. Roberts of Northwest Area County Court.
Mark J. Nichols, 21, of Shenango Boulevard, is to appear before Judge Roberts at 1 p.m. Thursday on a charge of receiving stolen property, a third-degree felony.
In an initial hearing Monday, Judge Roberts set bond at $10,000 and assigned Atty. Don Humphrey as defense counsel.
Antoinne Holmes, 26, of Beachwood Avenue, is to appear before Judge Roberts at 1 p.m. Monday on charges of complicity to commit theft, a third-degree felony, and burglary, a fourth-degree felony.
In an initial hearing Monday, Judge Roberts set bond at $10,000 for the complicity charge and $5,000 for the burglary charge. He assigned Atty. Theresa Tolson as defense counsel.
Charges were filed by Leetonia police.
What happened: Chief John Soldano said Patrolman John Finch was on routine patrol about 12:10 a.m. Sunday and recognized the speeding four-wheel drive pickup with Pennsylvania plates on state Route 344 in the village as one reported stolen earlier in Hermitage.
He stopped the truck on Somer Street and ordered the driver, Nichols, to the ground. The passenger, Holmes, fled, Soldano said.
Soldano said Holmes eluded police until about noon Sunday, when a resident, who checked a vacant Somer Street house she owns, confronted Holmes in an upstairs bedroom.
Soldano said Holmes left the house but Soldano and other officers were able to locate him and take him into custody without resistance. Soldano said besides officers on duty, others who were doing weapons qualification tests left the shooting range to assist.
Hermitage police officials say charges are pending in that city.
