Powder being tested
ROGERS -- Columbiana County authorities are having tested a white powdery substance found in a balloon at the Rogers Flea Market off state Route 154.
A man exercising at the closed market about 9 a.m. Tuesday kicked a balloon lying on the ground, Sheriff Dave Smith said today. The balloon burst and was found to contain about a handful of the white powder.
Mindful of the nationwide anthrax scare, authorities called in the East Liverpool Fire Department's hazardous materials team, which picked up the substance and sealed it in a container.
Post office scare
CAMPBELL -- The post office here was evacuated at 7:26 a.m. Tuesday and remained closed for about three hours after a postal worker got an unknown brown powdery substance on his bare hands while sorting a bundle of mail.
The worker was told to wash his hands and seek precautionary medical attention, the fire department said.
The bundle was placed inside double bags and into a bin, X-rayed and shipped to an Ohio Department of Health lab in Columbus for testing.
It is not known whether the postal worker inhaled the powder, the fire department said.
