COLUMBUS -- The lawyer representing Edward A. Cox says he has worked out a settlement with state lawyers probing a misconduct complaint against the former appeals court judge.
Larry H. James, Cox's Columbus attorney, refused to disclose specifics of the reported agreement, pending review and acceptance by a panel of the Ohio Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline, which considers misconduct by attorneys and judges.
"It covers both the terms and conditions, as well as the penalty," James said.
A hearing on the matter was continued Tuesday until Nov. 30.
Any agreement would have to be reviewed by the Ohio Supreme Court, which has the final say over misconduct cases.
Complaint: Cox, who sat on the 7th District Court of Appeals in Youngstown until he was defeated last November, was the subject of a four-count complaint filed by Ohio Disciplinary Counsel Jonathan E. Coughlan last December.
The complaint alleges various instances of misconduct, including Cox's accepting money from lawyers, then presiding over cases in which they were involved.
According to the complaint, Cox borrowed money from at least nine local lawyers "for the purpose of engaging in gambling activities."
In the past, Cox has disputed some of the allegations and has said some were distorted.
