Candidate forum isset for school board
LEETONIA -- A forum for candidates for the Leetonia Board of Education will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in the high school gym.
The event is sponsored by the Leetonia High School senior government class. Candidates will present their platforms, their reasons for running and their goals for their terms.

Items stolen from home
MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said a Sony PlayStation, various games and a bag of antique coins were stolen from a mobile home on Kirkland Drive in Lackawannock Township between 5:15 and 9:30 p.m. Friday.
The intruders forced open a window to get into the home.
KSU Salem hostspumpkin fest
SALEM -- A pumpkin fest at Kent State University Salem Campus will be Tuesday through Friday, with activities daily.
There will be pumpkin carving on the campus patios Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Thursday, there will be a pumpkin display at 7:30 p.m. on the front patio, and hayrides, refreshments and a storyteller. Pumpkins will be on display Friday from 7 to 11 p.m.
There is no charge for any events. KSU Salem is on state Route 45 south of Salem.
Thiel admissions office
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College has officially named its admissions office the Arthur J. and Eva R. Brosius Admissions Center.
The honor comes posthumously for the longtime friends of the college. Eva R. Brosius was associate dean of students, dean of women and director of placement at Thiel in the 1960s, and later worked at the University of Pittsburgh. She was named to the Thiel board of trustees in 1978, earning the Thiel alumni association's Alumni Award in 1990. She left the board in 1995.
Her husband, Arthur, vice president of Dravo Corp. in Pittsburgh when he retired, accompanied his wife on many of her trips to Greenville.
The couple created three scholarship funds -- the Arthur James Brosius Scholarship, the Brosius Scholarships and the E. Frank and Dorothy V. Brosius Scholarship. She died in 1998 and he died in 2000.
Cyclists die in accident
CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. (AP) -- Two motorcyclists died Sunday in a four-vehicle accident on Springfield Pike in Connellsville Township.
State police in Uniontown said Jonathan Kranik, 27, of Perryopolis and Joseph Ehland, 44, of McDonald were both riding north on their motorcycles when they came across a two-car accident. One of the vehicles struck Ehland's cycle, while Kranik's cycle swerved off the road and hit a tree.
Alvin Sapp, Fayette County deputy coroner, pronounced Kranik dead at the scene; Ehland died at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Authorities said the deadly accident occurred when the driver of a Ford Escape rear-ended a Pontiac sedan on the southbound lane. The Ford swerved into the northbound lanes and struck Ehland.
The driver of the Ford suffered minor injuries; the driver of the sedan was uninjured.
Rebuilding an old street
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The city of Pittsburgh is hoping to rebuild a 1-mile stretch of road in its East End neighborhood that has sewers dating back to the mid-1800s.
Water pressure is so weak along parts of Penn Avenue that some buildings have to pump it to the upper floors. The sidewalks are damaged, and there are some cast-iron poles left over from the streetcar era.
Penn Avenue is one of several streets being targeted for major repairs over the next three or four years.
The others are Penn Circle, Brookline Boulevard, Wenzell Avenue and Forbes Avenue and Market Street in downtown.
The repairs along Penn Avenue will cost an estimated $9 million to $10 million dollars. New waterlines and sewers will be at the top of the list.
Officials say the lines were built in the mid-1800s; some were replaced 40 years ago. The project is expected to be completed by 2006.
