Fonderlac teamin nationals
POLAND -- When Fonderlac Country Club members Don Kniska, Tom Onesti, Alice Porter and Joe Valentini teamed up with Squaw Creek Country Club assistant golf professional Scott Karabin this past summer to put a team in the local Oldsmobile Scramble tournament they had no idea what they were in for.
That team easily won their local and Ohio sectional tournaments and qualified for the national finals hosted by Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
In all there were 20,000 entries into this tournament throughout the country, a total of 130 of them qualified for the national finals in Orlando.
The team led by Karabin, one of the top playing professionals in the area, and Kniska, considered one of the area's best amateurs, was competing in the gross division of the tournament.
They shot scores of 58, 57 and 60 for a 41-under-par total over the Palm, Celebrity and Magnolia courses and qualified for the final round.
In that final round, which only 24 teams survived, the locals shot a 59 for a four-round total of 234 and finished 13th in the country and took home $2,350 in prizes.
"It was just an unbelievable experience," Kniska said. "We never dreamed that we would be in the finals."
"This tournament is in a class by itself," added Onesti. "It was run so smoothly."
The tournament was won by a team from Cottage Grove, Minn., which short a 57 final round and a 223 total.
