OHIO CONFERENCE Capital offense can't hurt MUC

Mount Union's coaching staff said it prepared diligently for the Crusaders.

ALLIANCE -- So much for Capital University's no-huddle, spread-out, shotgun offense.
The Crusaders, held to 30 total yards and two first downs in the first half, absorbed a 52-13 beating by Mount Union College before 4,089 fans Saturday in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Mount Union Stadium.
The Purple Raiders (7-0, 6-0 OAC) generated 595 yards of offense with running backs Chuck Moore and Jason Pugh gaining 165 and 134, respectively.
Said Pugh, "There's nothing greater than two backs getting 100 yards. We came out and played well and helped each other get the job done."
Moore had a 75-yard touchdown run with 8 minutes, 14 seconds remaining in the first quarter to give Mount Union a 7-0 lead. He also tallied on runs of 10 and 9 yards.
Career-high: Pugh's 131 yards were a career high and he scored on a 4-yard run. Moore caught three passes for 17 yards and Pugh four for 43.
It was the 69th consecutive regular-season win for Mount and 62nd straight victory in the OAC.
In the first half the Purple Raiders' 45 plays produced 309 yards as they built a 35-0 lead.
Preparations: Mount Union coach Larry Kehres said, "Our coaching staff was very thorough in preparations for this game.
"We stopped their screen pass and their tailback and quarterback counters in the first half. Our players are becoming accustomed to the no-offense huddle and this was the most we ever prepared for it.
"Capital came in with a 5-1 record and had been playing well and we didn't take them lightly."
The Crusaders (5-2, 4-2), managed only two first downs in the first half, but started the third quarter by marching 78 yards in 10 plays to get on the scoreboard.
Dan Peterson caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dan Bartholomew to complete the drive.
Mount Union answered with a 69-yard, 12-play march with Moore scoring on a 9-yard run. The Crusaders had a 13-play, 57-yard drive halted at the Mount Union 15 with 3:44 remaining in the third period.
The Purple Raiders struck quickly as quarterback Rob Adamson completed a pass to Jason Candle at the Crusaders' 40 and Candle sprinted into the end zone for a touchdown and a 49-7 margin.
Adamson completed 16-of-26 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns, which included a 23-yard scoring toss to Candle in the first quarter. Candle caught four passes for 125 yards.
The Purple Raiders' final points came on a 13-play, 82-yard drive which ended when Rodney Chenos kicked a 19-yard field goal.
