Child-care workshop
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County office of Ohio State University Extension will present a workshop titled "Food: It's More Than Just Eating" at 7 p.m. Thursday at the extension office, 490 S. Broad St. "Child-care providers will learn about eating behaviors and what to expect from infants, toddlers and preschoolers at lunch and snack time," said Wanema Flasher, Family and Consumer Sciences agent in Mahoning County. Senior sleep study
PITTSBURGH -- Researchers at UPMC Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic are launching a five-year study of how slight changes -- less than two hours -- in bedtime can be used to improve the sleep of senior citizens. Paid volunteers will live individually in a special laboratory apartment at UPMC for three separate five-day periods, during which their sleep, biological clock and daytime functioning will be monitored. The study, funded by the National Institute on Aging, seeks 20 healthy people, age 70 or older, as well as 10 people, ages 20 to 35. Call (412) 624-3807 for more information. Free eye exams
Low-income uninsured workers and their families may now begin applying for free eye exams to be conducted next year in local optometrists' offices under the American Optometric Association's Vision USA program, now celebrating its 12th anniversary. Applications may be obtained from Vision USA, 243 N. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, Mo. 63141. Completed forms must be postmarked by Jan. 23.
Nutrition for diabetics
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- To celebrate National Diabetes Education Week, The Diabetes Center at St. Francis will present "Bon Appetit: A Day in the Life of the Food Pyramid," a seminar designed to explain why proper nutrition is essential for managing diabetes. It will be from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 3 at the St. Francis Conference Center, 1100 South Mercer Street. Cost of the seminar is $5. Registration is limited. Relief fund buffet
YOUNGSTOWN -- An American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund buffet will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at The Youngstown Club, 201 E. NAMI education event
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Lawrence County will conduct a parents-in-education meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Shenango High School Library. Topics will include special education, accommodations for pupils with disabilities, instructional support, individualized education and speech and language programs.
Flu shots available
GREENFORD -- Flu shots will be available from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Green Township Community and Administration Building for people 50 years of age and older. Medicare cards will be honored. The cost will be $11 for all others. Register by calling (330) 533-5352.
Kids' immunizations
GIRARD -- A well-child immunization clinic will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the city health department offices in the city building. The clinic is free to children residing in Girard, and Dr. James J. Enyeart, health commissioner, will conduct the examinations. A parent or guardian must accompany children under age 18 and must bring a copy of the child's immunization record. Parents must register their children before the clinic by calling the health department at (330) 545-6048 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Mobile Medical Clinic
YOUNGSTOWN -- St. Elizabeth's Mobile Medical Clinic will be at The Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 29. The mobile clinic provides free care to people without medical coverage. A family physician is on board. Services provided include checkups, examination of the ill, cancer and blood pressure screenings, health information and referrals. People with medical coverage must bring their medical cards or proof of medical insurance. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. No appointment is necessary.
Cancer and appearance
CANFIELD -- The American Cancer Society will conduct a free "Look Good, Feel Better" program from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29 in its offices at 525 N. Broad St. for women concerned about the effect cancer treatment may have on their appearance and self-esteem. The program offers advice for women facing hair loss and covers skin, hair and nail care, and the effective use of wigs, scarves, turbans and hats. Instruction is provided by a licensed cosmetologist donating her time. All items used in the class are donated to each participant. Yoga for beginners
WARREN -- St. Joseph Health Center will offer a seven-session beginning yoga class from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. or 7 to 8:15 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 29-Dec. 10, in the hospital's atrium. The class, featuring instruction in breathing and relaxation techniques, will be taught by Dawn Perhacs of the Kripalu Yoga and Health Center, Lenox, Mass., a certified instructor who has practiced yoga for 27 years and has 20 years of teaching experience. The program is for adults only and the cost is $57. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or blanket and a small pillow to class. Genealogy seminar
BOARDMAN -- Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will hold a fall seminar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 3 at the auditorium of St. Charles School, Westview Drive. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The program includes "Beginning Your Genealogy" by Judy Bishara, "Dancing Around Your Neighborhood" by Alyssa Powell, "Research Cycle -- Don't Pedal Backward," and "Messages From the Grave -- Listen to Your Ancestor's Tombstones." Kraut festival plans
CANFIELD -- Haus Red Apple Orchard and Cider Mill, 6742 W. Calla Road, will have its Kraut Fest Nov. 3-4. Entertainment will include Wayne Tomsick and the Sovich Brothers, the Mahoning County Button Box Club, pig poll dash, children's costume contest, steam engine displays, pony rides, magic show and food. BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- An apple festival and bazaar are planned for Nov. 2 and 3 at Concord United Methodist Church, Pa. Route 588, North Sewickley Township. Homemade crafts, apple dumplings, baked goods and apple butter will be sold from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 2 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 3. Proceeds benefit Concord's mission projects.
