Horner, Vicarelnamed captains
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University seniors Jenny Horner and Monica Vicarel have been named team captains for the 2001-02 women's basketball season.
Last season, Horner had a team-best .462 field- goal percentage and averaged 5.1 points per game while Vicarel averaged 4.4 points per game and led the Penguins with 51 steals.

Holman elected
YOUNGSTOWN -- Len Holman has been elected president of the Youngstown District Football Officials Association for the 2002 football season at its business meeting.
Other officers are: Gary Jennings, vice president; and Jim Gahagan, secretary-treasurer.
Officials receiving recognition for 15 years of service were Chip Cspeggi, Joe Ducay, Brian Meenachan, Calvin Tillman, Joe Vitello and Dan Wilson.
Officials receiving recognition for 20 years of service were Lou Cerimele, Don D'Alesio, Joe DeRosa, John DiRenzo, Jim Ferraro, Ray Makara and Dan Mancuso.
Recognized for 25 years of service were Vince Julian, Bob Kane and Jack Nagle. Joe Meranto was recognized for 17 years as the secretary-treasurer and for his 27 years as an official. He is retiring after the 2001 season.
LaRosa's teamsets records
BOARDMAN -- Captain Carl LaRosa, manager of the Jump Stretch Fitness Center, was one of seven members of Team Jump Stretch that came away with national records at the U.S. All-Round Weightlifting Association competition at Ambridge, Pa.
In the men's open, Brandon Todd Aldan lifted 480 pounds, Antoniano Del Signore, 705 and Jason Groves, 520 and LaRosa's straight leg dead lift was 415.
Dick Hartzell, in the men's over 60 vertical bar (2 hands), lifted 185 and his hip lift was 900. Joe Hunter, 15-16, straight leg dead lift was 350, while John McKean's, 60-over, trap bar dead lift was 450.
Surack to compete
KOKOMO, Ind. -- Joe Surack, a former Youngstown resident, will compete for the Kokomo school of self defense, in the PKC Nationals title kickboxing event in Greenville, South Carolina, Nov. 10. He won the state-regional PKC title in Muncie, Ind. July 29.
OHSAA offersfree tickets
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio High School Athletic Association will admit all police officers, firefighters and EMTs for free at the finals of the four upcoming fall sports state tournaments and all five rounds of the regional and state football tournaments.
The OHSAA is doing this to salute the heroic efforts of the police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians at the horrific tragedies in New York City and Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11 and to recognize the daily efforts of those same people in our cities and communities throughout the country.
ONN plansplayoff show
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio News Network will announce the Ohio High School Athletic Association high school football playoff pairings Oct. 28.
The program will air from 12:30-1 p.m. During the show, ONN, in conjunction with the OHSAA, will announce the playoff teams and the brackets for all six divisions and 24 regions.

Yokoo leads
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Japanese rookie Kaname Yokoo shot a 7-under-par 65 on Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Jerry Smith in the National Car Rental Classic at Disney World
Yokoo, who has won each of the past three years on the Japanese tour, had a 13-under 131 total. Smith shot his second straight 66.
Davis Love III (66) and Argentina's Jose Coceres (65) were two strokes back at 133, and PGA champion David Toms (68) was another stroke back along with Fiji's Vijay Singh (68), Brian Wilson (68) and David Peoples (65). Tiger Woods (67) was five strokes back.
After another day of low scoring on the Magnolia and Palm courses next door to the Magic Kingdom, the cut was 5-under 139, the lowest in the 23 years of stroke play at Disney.
McCord has2-stroke lead
SAN ANTONIO -- Gary McCord made six birdies in an eight-hole stretch en route to 9-under 63 and a two-stroke lead after the first round of the SBC Championship.
McCord, the CBS announcer seeking his second career Senior PGA Tour title, matched the tournament record on The Dominion Country Club course set last year by Fred Gibson.
Bobby Wadkins opened with a 65, and Bruce Fleisher shot a 66. Defending champion Doug Tewell stood at 67.
