YOUNGSTOWN -- A Veterans Day Memorial Mass commemorating the courage and patriotism of our armed services will be Nov. 11 in St. Columba Cathedral.
A musical prelude is at 1:45 p.m., and posting of the colors at 2 p.m. will be followed by a Mass to offer prayers for the Sept. 11 victims and their families. The Gathering of the Irish Clans, an association of local Irish cultural organizations, has initiated the memorial.
Novena and conferenceat national shrine
NORTH JACKSON -- The National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon will have a St. Jude Triduum with Novena prayers at 7 p.m. Friday through Oct. 28.
There will also be a conference day on "Learning Faith Through Liturgy" Nov. 4 at the shrine, led by the Rev. Mitch Pacwa, an Old Testament scholar. Events include: registration, 9 a.m.; Divine Liturgy, 10 a.m.; first conference, 11:30 a.m.; lunch, 12:30 p.m.; second conference, 2 p.m.; Eucharistic Adoration, 3 p.m.; and Benediction, 4 p.m. The $15 cost includes lunch. Knights of Columbus
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, local priests and an ordained deacon were recently admitted into the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus. The ceremony at St. Matthias Church, for which Youngstown Bishop James W. Malone Assembly No. 826 played host, was part of the 101st anniversary celebration of the assembly's original charter in 1900. In addition to Bishop Tobin, the others admitted were the Revs. Anthony Salim, Regis Heuschkel, Richard Pentello and William B. Kraynak, and Deacon Robert J. Cuttica.
The Fourth Degree is the highest and most prestigious degree in the Knights of Columbus and is known as the order's patriotic degree because its knights are dedicated to the service of their country and church. The event included celebration of Mass and a banquet at which Baci Carpico, former vice supreme master, was honored for his years of service.
Retreat offered
VILLA MARIA, Pa.-- EverGreen presents a weekend retreat, "The Zen of Hand Made Paper" with Rosemarie Huart, at the Villa Maria Community Center at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 until noon Nov. 11. The retreat will explore the world of handmade paper in relation to spiritual journeys. Huart has studied papermaking in Japan and has made paper for 15 years. 130th anniversary
HUBBARD -- The Coalburg United Methodist Church will observe its 130th anniversary with a worship and praise service at 4 p.m. Oct. 28. Fifty-year members will be honored. A lunch will follow.
Benefit for victims
BOARDMAN -- St. Charles Youth Ministry of Boardman will gather sponsors to raise money during the "Fast for Freedom" fund-raiser to benefit the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The members will participate in various activities during a 20-hour fast from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Oct. 27. Call (330) 758-0375.
State fellowship
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio State Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship will have its Annual State Fellowship at 7 p.m. Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at the Guiding Light Center of Hope.

Dwayne Heard of Guiding Light, state director of pastors fellowship; Nov. 1, Pastor Renea Collins of Mount Liberty Full Gospel Baptist Church, Akron, fellowship administrator; and Nov. 2, Bishop William W.
