Liberty outlasts Brookfield in TAC
Lakeview took advantage of Newton Falls' turnovers.
BROOKFIELD -- The Trumbull Athletic Conference shootout of the night was in Brookfield where all of the scoring took place in three quarters before Liberty won 36-33 Friday.
Liberty's Jaris Williams scored twice, including the go-ahead touchdown, a 64-yard run with 1:31 remaining in the third quarter.
Brookfield (1-8, 1-5) took a 33-30 lead on Lou Scudere's 95-yard kickoff return and the point-after kick.
The other touchdown by Williams, who finished with 211 yards on 19 carries, covered 56 yards.
Also churning up the real estate for the Leopards (5-4, 4-2) was Steve Patterson with two touchdown runs over distances of 40 and 49 yards. Patterson gained 152 yards on 10 carries.
Liberty out-gained Brookfield on the ground, 433-208, while the Warriors had more in the air, 139-48.
No more than seven points separated the teams, coming when Liberty pulled ahead 14-7 before the Warriors scored twice to take the lead, 20-14.
Lakeview 29, Newton Falls 12: NEWTON FALLS -- Newton Falls scored first, but Lakeview stormed back to take the lead en route to its victory.
All of Lakeview's points came from turnovers except those from the first touchdown.
Newton Falls (5-4, 3-3) lost three fumbles and had one interception. Pete Brister picked up two fumbles, including one he returned for a 45-yard touchdown, while Asher Falatic recovered a fumble and had the theft.
Brister scored Lakeview's first TD on a 2-yard run followed by an 18-yarder by Neil Feist. Falatic also caught a 12-yard TD pass from Kevin Rigby. Mike Megyesi kicked a 22-yard field goal for the Bulldogs (3-6, 3-3).
Newton Falls quarterback Tom Nemet scored the game's first TD from 54 yards away. The Tigers' last touchdown came when Sam Saab caught a 4-yard pass from Kirby Stahlinger.
Lakeview had 294 total yards, with 152 of the 200 rushing accumulated by Brister on 29 carries. The Bulldogs also passed for 94 more.
Newton Falls had 272 total yards, with 213 coming on the ground. Nemet gained 87 yards on nine carries, while tailback Marty Hutchinson added 76 yards on 13 carries.
Nemet completed 6-of-12 passes for 55 yards and had interception.
Champion 44, LaBrae 22: CHAMPION -- The Golden Flashes improved their record to 4-5, 2-4. LaBrae is 1-8, 0-6.
