CANTON -- The Chaney High football team traveled here Friday with the chance to become the first unbeaten and unscored upon team in the City Series.
The Cowboys succeeded as Ed McElroy scored four touchdowns on runs of 1, 6, 7 and 3 yards in Chaney's 42-0 win over Timken.
The Cowboys (8-1, 3-0), who are this week's No. 7 team in the Associated Press poll of Division II teams, clinched the City Series title.
The Cowboys are ranked second in this week's Region V computer playoff ratings.
No. 1 again: It was the 33rd City Series championship for the Cowboys and 12th in the last 13 years.
"The personality of this team is that they are totally team orientated," Chaney coach Ron Berdis said. "It was a great team win and our kids did what they had to do offensively and defensively."
Early on, Timken threatened by taking the opening kickoff and moving in nine plays to the Chaney 8-yard line.
Timken quarterback Anthony Barson's pass was intercepted by Chris Eskew at the 3 to squelch the drive.
"They kept going to their tight end and I made an easy read and went to the ball," said Eskew, a sophomore defensive back.
The Cowboys marched 97 yards in 10 plays, with McElroy going the last yard for a touchdown.
McElroy gained 69 yards on five carries during the march, with a 47-yard run a key play.
He finished with 162 yards on 15 carries, leaving him 13 yards short of 1,000 for the season. He has tallied 18 times so far this year, 17 on the ground.
Giving credit: "My line did a good job of containing inside so I could bounce outside," McElroy said. "We came here and played hard to win. We knew we had to stop their running game and make ours go."
Chaney had 19 first downs to seven for Timken (3-6, 1-1).
The Cowboys had 289 yards rushing with seven different backs carrying the ball. They finished with 327 yards of total offense to Timken's 20, and it was minus-40 rushing.
