AMERICAN STANDARD Salem plant eliminates salaried jobs

The company said it is cutting nearly 2 percent of its work force worldwide.
SALEM -- Salaried jobs are being eliminated at American Standard's Salem plant as part of the company's plan to cut 1,000 jobs nationwide.
The company isn't saying how many jobs are being cut at any one plant, but the job losses in Salem are a small number, said Lisa Glover, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey-based manufacturer. The Salem plant employs 530.
She said the action is not considered a layoff because the jobs are being permanently cut. The plant is American Standard's only bathtub plant in the United States.
American Standard said this week that it is cutting nearly 2 percent of its worldwide work force in anticipation of a continued sales slump.
The company said this week that it earned $90 million, or $1.23 a share, in the third quarter, compared with $89 million in the same quarter last year. Revenue, however, fell 4 percent to $1.89 billion.
Fred Boses, company chairman and chief executive, said increased productivity and cost-reduction efforts led to the slight increase in profits despite falling revenues.
Besides bathroom and kitchen fixtures, American Standard is the maker of Trane and American Standard air conditioning systems. It employs about 60,000 people in 27 countries.
