Professor will speakat honors gathering
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Dr. Theodore O. Wallin, a 1964 Thiel graduate and professor at Syracuse University School of Management, will be the keynote speak at Thiel College's annual honors convocation at 7 p.m. Friday in Passavant Memorial Center. The college will recognize 233 students for their academic achievements in the 2000-2001 school year and freshman scholarship recipients will also be announced. Wallin is a visiting scholar at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong.
Parolee arrested
FARRELL -- Police said Pennsylvania parole and probation agents arrested Henry Bruce, 30, of Market Street, Monday on a charge of possession of marijuana. Bruce is on parole in an unrelated case. Police said the parole agents found 17 small bags of suspected marijuana and $200 cash on Bruce. He was arraigned before District Justice Henry Russo and put in Mercer County Jail on $7,500 bond and a parole detainer.
Powders tested
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police collected white powder from a post office lobby and a housing project in New Castle. An employee at the post office in the Cascade Galleria found a white, chalky substance while cleaning the lobby at 8:47 a.m. Monday, police said. Another unknown white substance was found on the door of a Beech Street apartment in the Westview Terrace public housing project at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday by an insect exterminator. Police collected samples of both substances and sent them to a laboratory set up by the FBI in North Park in Allegheny County for testing. Police Chief Victor Cubellis said he is still waiting for word from the laboratory on the white substance found by a repairman on Highland Avenue in a box of toilet repair parts Saturday.
Cops probe drive-by
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are investigating a South Side drive-by house shooting after they found a handgun and assault rifle near the home where a 3-year-old boy lived with his mother and grandmother.
The grandmother, 38, reported that she and her daughter and grandson were on the second level of their South Florida Avenue home about 10 p.m. Tuesday when they heard gunfire and found that the first floor had been damaged. The 21-year-old daughter said the shots may have been fired by a 16-year-old boy who has been feuding with her family.
Police found seven gunshot holes in the home's first floor front wall. They found 16 shell casings from three different types of guns on the sidewalk, street and yard in front of the home and on the street in front of a neighboring home, police reports show.
Officers also found a damaged Dodge Dakota abandoned sideways in the roadway at East Florida and Rush Boulevard. Inside, they discovered a 9 mm handgun between the passenger seat and center console. An AK-47 was found in the yard of a nearby East Florida Avenue home, near tire tracks left by the truck.
Gunman fires at man
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 19-year-old North Side resident told police he had been ordered at gunpoint to take off his clothes by one of two men who had come to his West Dennick Avenue home wanting to fight, and was fired upon when he attempted to run away. The teen said the men came to his home about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, and all three went to the corner of Dennick and Cordova avenues when one of the men pulled a handgun, pointed it at the teen and ordered him to strip, police reports show. A 21-year-old female witness grabbed the gunman. As the 19-year-old fled, the gunman fired five or six shots toward him. He told police he knew one of the assailants and believes he is about 20.
Drug charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 21-year-old Parkwood Avenue man faces a charge of aggravated trafficking in cocaine after police found several rocks of suspected crack cocaine on him when arresting him on the South Side for driving without a license. Police said the man was driving a 1988 Pontiac Bonneville on Rush Boulevard at East Avondale without a front plate. When they attempted to stop the car, the driver pulled into a corner driveway, exited the car and attempted to enter the home, but it was locked. Police discovered he had no license, arrested him and found a pill bottle with nine small baggies containing two to three small white rocks each. They also found another container holding two large white rocks, two smaller white rocks and small chips. Police suspect the crack was packaged for sale. They confiscated the rocks and $92.
