District approves smoking policy

SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- Smokers who attend events on the grounds of the Sharpsville Area School District will have to move at least 50 feet away from any building and the football stadium before lighting up.
The school board adopted a new smoking policy Monday to comply with a Pennsylvania law that says a school district can ban smoking entirely or can set up designated smoking zones at least 50 feet from buildings and facilities.
Dr. Douglas Hazlett, assistant superintendent, said the board opted for the latter.
Sharpsville facilities were already all nonsmoking, but people attending a basketball game could just step outside the gymnasium door to have a smoke, he said. Now, they have to move away from the building, he said.
