Warren JFK rolls to second straight state golf crown

VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
COLUMBUS -- There was little doubt whether the Warren Kennedy High boys golf team would win its second straight Division III state title.
Leading by eight strokes entering final-round play Saturday, the Eagles didn't let up, shooting a second straight 309 for a two-day total of 618 at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course.
Their effort was good enough for an 18-stroke victory over second-place Gahanna Columbus Academy.
Kokrak medalist: The Eagles, coached by Bob Todd and Bob Heltzel, were led by junior Jason Kokrak, who took medalist honors with 146 (72-74).
Kennedy senior Chris Macali and sophomore Colin Clemente tied for third place, with 153s. Macali shot 75-78, while Clemente carded 77-76.
Also for the Eagles, junior Jim Scheiber shot 166 (85-81), while senior Kevin Costello had 175 (90-85).
Meanwhile, Sebring senior Cory Schneider wasn't far off the pace, shooting 158 (80-78) in individual play.
Division II: The Div. II competition was much closer, with Granville's 599 edging out Lima Shawnee (601) and the 604s shot by Notre Dame Cathedral Latin and Chillicothe Unioto.
Entering play Saturday, Granville trailed leader Unioto by four strokes.
Earning medalist honors was New Richmond senior Justin Fender, who carded 137 (70-67) for a six-stroke victory over Canton Central Catholic's J.D. Shonhoft.
The boys Division I and girls tournaments will be held next weekend at Ohio State.
